Keep the person, pet or object sharp and blur everything behind it, like portrait mode. Compare before and after. Runs on your device.
To blur the background of a photo, the tool first finds the subject with an AI model that runs in your browser, then blurs everything outside it and keeps the subject sharp. The model gives a soft mask: a value for every pixel from background to subject. The blur is made from the background pixels only, so colours from the subject never smear into the background and leave a halo around hair or shoulders. Finally the sharp picture and the blurred one are mixed through the mask. You move the strength and feather sliders and the preview updates at once, because the model runs only one time for each picture.
Blur strength runs from 1 to 10 and is a share of the picture's long edge: strength 5 on a 4000 pixel wide photo is a blur radius of about 60 pixels, and the same setting looks alike on a phone photo and on a large one. Edge feather sets how gradually the picture changes from sharp to blurred around the subject. At 0 the edge follows the model's mask as it is. Higher values give a wider, softer transition, which usually looks better on hair and fur. Portrait blur is a smooth, even blur. Bokeh blurs a little flatter and brightens the lightest pixels before blurring, so lights in the background spread into soft glowing patches. The compare slider draws the original on the left of a line so you can check the edge before you save.
It works best when one clear subject, such as a person, a pet or a product, stands apart from the background. It does not measure depth. A real camera blurs things more the further they are from the focus point, while this tool applies one even blur to everything it counts as background, so a fence next to the subject is blurred as much as a mountain far away. The model can miss thin parts such as strands of hair, a bicycle spoke or a glass handle, and with several people it may keep some and blur others. If the result is nearly all blurred or nearly all sharp, the tool says so under the result. For a plain blur of the whole picture, use Blur image instead.
The first time you use it, your browser downloads the AI runtime (about 3.5 MB) and the model (about 43 MB). Your browser then keeps them, and the Remove background tool uses the same model, so it is only downloaded once for both. The picture itself is never uploaded: the mask and the blur are worked out on a canvas in this tab. Pictures over 8 megapixels (4 megapixels on phones and tablets) are made smaller first, and the result says when that happened. The result is saved as JPG by default, with PNG and WebP as options, and carries none of the original's metadata such as GPS location.
Add the picture, wait for the message that the subject was found, then move Blur strength. A strength of 5 blurs a 4000 pixel wide photo with a radius of about 60 pixels. Use the compare slider to check the edge and download the result as JPG.
That is the AI model that finds the subject, plus a 3.5 MB runtime. It is downloaded once and your browser keeps it. The Remove background tool uses the same model, so using one tool makes the other start quickly.
Yes. It runs in the phone's browser. Pictures over 4 megapixels, about 2312 by 1734 pixels, are made smaller first on phones and tablets, and the result says so. The model download is about 43 MB, so use Wi-Fi the first time.
Portrait blur is an even, smooth blur. Bokeh blurs flatter and boosts the brightest pixels before the blur, so a string of lights or sun through leaves turns into soft bright patches. On a picture with no bright lights the two look close.
Try 4 to 7. At 0 the edge follows the model's mask exactly and can look cut out. Higher values mix sharp and blurred over a wider band, which hides small mistakes in strands of hair. Go above 8 and a visible glow can form around the subject.
No. It applies one even blur to everything outside the subject and does not measure depth. A camera's portrait mode blurs far objects more than near ones. For a natural look keep the strength moderate, around 3 to 6.
