Cryptogram puzzle: solve the secret sentence

Crack a sentence written in a substitution cipher. Tap a letter, type or use the A to Z pad, get graded hints, and play a new daily puzzle every day.

How it works

  1. Tap a letter in the puzzle to select it
  2. Type the letter you think it stands for, or tap it on the pad
  3. Keep going until the whole sentence reads clearly

How a cryptogram works

A cryptogram is a short sentence written in a substitution cipher, and you solve it by working out which real letter each coded letter stands for. Every plain letter is swapped for one other letter, always the same one, so if K stands for E in one place it stands for E everywhere. Here no letter ever stands for itself, so a coded K is never a plain K. Spaces and punctuation are left alone, which gives you the shape of every word. Select a letter and every copy of it lights up. Type your guess and it fills all of them at once. If you use the same plain letter for two different coded letters, both are marked as a conflict, because one plain letter can only have one code. The solution is a sentence that reads clearly, and the puzzle is finished when every coded letter holds the right guess.

How to start and keep going

Look at the shape of the words before you guess. A word of one letter is almost always A or I. In ordinary English the letters E, T, A, O, I and N are among the most common, so the coded letter that appears most often is a good first guess for E or T. Turn on Letter counts in the menu to see how often each coded letter appears. The most common three letter word is THE, so a three letter word that repeats is worth testing. Double letters such as LL, EE, SS or OO, and endings such as ING and ED give more clues. Make a guess, see whether the words around it start to look real, and use Undo when they do not. Guesses are free, and nothing is lost by trying.

Hints, checking and the keyboard

There are two graded hints. Hint reveals one letter: the one you have selected if it is not right yet, otherwise the most common one still wrong. Reveal a word, in the menu, fills in every letter of the word you have selected. A revealed letter is shown with a double underline and cannot be changed. A puzzle that used a hint still counts as solved, but it is left out of your best time. Check turns on error marking, which crosses out each guess that is wrong, so use it when you want to know rather than find out. On a computer, typing a letter fills the selected coded letter and moves on to the next one without a guess, the arrow keys move between letters and words, and Backspace erases. Control or Command with Z undoes. On a phone, use the A to Z pad under the puzzle; letters that already carry a guess are dimmed there. The coded letters in the puzzle are small, so the two arrow buttons beside the message line below the pad move the selection to the previous or next letter, and each is a full size touch target.

The daily puzzle, practice and how many sentences there are

The daily puzzle comes from the date on your device, so everyone with the same date gets the same sentence in the same code, and finishing it counts once a day toward a daily streak. Practice gives you a random puzzle. All the sentences are original lines written for this page, 70 in all: more than half are short facts that can be checked, such as how many hearts an octopus has, and the rest are proverb-style lines. Each puzzle shuffles the alphabet from its own seed, so a sentence you have seen before comes back in a different code, but the list is not endless and you will meet repeats. Your puzzle in progress, your time, your solved count and your streak are saved in this browser only.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cryptogram?

A cryptogram is a sentence in which every letter has been replaced by another letter, the same one each time. You decode it by finding the plain letter behind each code letter. This one uses a full A to Z substitution where no letter stands for itself.

Why is my guess marked as a conflict?

You gave the same plain letter to two different coded letters, for example E for both K and M. A substitution cipher is one to one, so each plain letter has exactly one code. Change one of the two guesses and the mark goes away.

What is the difference between Hint and Reveal a word?

Hint reveals one letter: your selected coded letter, or the most common one that is still wrong. Reveal a word fills in every letter of the word you selected. Either one means the puzzle is not counted for your best time, but it still counts as solved.

How is the daily cryptogram chosen?

The daily puzzle is chosen from the date on your device, such as 2026-10-25, plus the game name. Everyone with the same date gets the same sentence in the same code. It counts once a day toward your daily streak.

Will the sentences ever run out?

The page has 70 original sentences, and each puzzle shuffles the alphabet from a new seed, so a repeat sentence looks different. The list is finite, so over a few months you will see the same sentence again, in another code.

Does the game save my progress?

Yes, in this browser only. The puzzle you are on, your guesses, your time, your solved count, your streak and the number of hints you have used stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and the page counts visits with Google Analytics, never your guesses.
