Zakat calculator

Zakat due on cash, gold, silver, investments, business assets and money owed, less debts, against the nisab you choose.

How it works

  1. Enter your cash, gold and silver, investments, business assets and money owed to you
  2. Type today's price per gram of gold and silver, enter debts due soon, choose a silver or gold nisab and answer the lunar-year question
  3. Read the zakat due, your zakatable wealth and how far you are from the nisab

How zakat is worked out

Zakat is 2.5% of your zakatable wealth once that wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for one lunar year, so with 10,000 in savings and a nisab of 476 the zakat due is 250. The nisab is 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver, converted to money with today's price per gram, which you type in because the page has no live price feed (the figures 10,000 and 476 are an example, not a market price). Zakatable wealth is your cash and bank balances, gold and silver at their value, investments you hold to sell, stock and cash in a business, and loans you expect to be repaid, minus debts you must pay soon. If the result is below the nisab, or the wealth has not been held for a lunar year, nothing is due, and the page asks you about the lunar year before it shows an amount. A lunar year is about 354 days.

Silver or gold for the nisab

The two metals give very different thresholds because silver is far cheaper per gram, so a silver nisab means more people owe zakat. Guidance differs by scholar and school on which to use: Islamic Relief says the Hanafi school uses silver and the other schools gold, while other discussions record both opinions, and a Qatar Charity fatwa prefers gold because scholars agree on the gold weight of 20 mithqal while the silver weight depends on how a dirham is measured. The page does not choose for you: pick silver or gold yourself, and switch between the common weights (85 g and 595 g) and the alternative weights of 87.48 g and 612.36 g that some scholars give. It then shows how far above or short of the nisab you are, so you can see whether the choice changes your result.

Sources and the points scholars differ on

The nisab weights and the lunar year are taken from Islamic Relief's nisab page and a Qatar Charity fatwa, the 2.5% rate from Human Appeal, and the deduction of debts from answers by Darul Ifta Birmingham. These are charity and fatwa-service pages as read on 25 October 2026, not one legal authority. Scholars differ on several points the page cannot settle: whether jewellery worn for personal use counts, how to treat shares and retirement funds, whether long-term debts such as a mortgage are deducted in full, and how to value property bought to sell. The page uses the simple rule of deducting debts due soon. For your own case, ask a qualified scholar.

What is not covered

The page covers zakat on money, gold, silver, investments, trade goods and receivables. It does not work out zakat on livestock, crops or mineral finds, Zakat al-Fitr, or the pure-gold weight of mixed-purity jewellery (enter pure-gold-equivalent grams). It also does not remember the date your wealth first reached the nisab, so the lunar-year answer is your own statement and the page shows no zakat due until you give it. Nothing you type is stored or sent, and the result is a calculation aid and not a religious ruling.

Frequently asked questions

How much is zakat on 10,000?

250, if the 10,000 has been held for a lunar year and is at or above the nisab. That is 2.5% of 10,000. If you have debts due soon of 2,000, the zakatable wealth is 8,000 and the zakat is 200.

What is the nisab for zakat?

The equivalent of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Some scholars give 87.48 grams and 612.36 grams instead. To turn it into money, multiply the grams by today's price per gram, so at 60 per gram of gold the gold nisab is 5,100.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Guidance differs by scholar and school, so the page makes you choose. Silver gives the lower threshold, so someone with wealth between the two thresholds owes zakat on the silver nisab and not on the gold one. Follow your own scholar or school, and ask a scholar if you are unsure.

Do I pay zakat on gold jewellery I wear?

Scholars differ, and the page cannot settle it. Some count personal jewellery once it reaches the nisab and others do not. The page counts any gold you enter, so leave jewellery out if your school or scholar exempts it.

Are debts deducted before zakat?

Debts due soon are deducted from your assets, and 2.5% is taken from what is left if it still reaches the nisab. With assets of 6,000, debts of 500 and a gold nisab of 5,100, the wealth is 5,500 and the zakat is 137.50. Opinions differ on long-term debts.

When is zakat due?

One lunar year (about 354 days) after your wealth first reached the nisab. Many people choose a fixed date, such as the start of Ramadan, and work out their wealth that day. This page cannot track dates, so it asks you and shows no zakat due amount until you answer Yes or No.
