Test yourself on the capital of every country: pick a region, choose from 4 answers or type it, play 10, 25 or all, then review what you missed or study the full list.
The quiz asks for the capital city of 195 countries: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two observer states, the Holy See and Palestine. Pick World or one of five regions: Africa has 54 countries, the Americas 35, Asia 48, Europe 44 and Oceania 14. The regions follow the United Nations geoscheme, so Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova count as Europe, while Turkey, Cyprus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan count as Asia. Play 10 or 25 random countries, or all of them in the region. In 4-choice mode the three wrong answers are capitals from the same region, so you cannot win by spotting a different continent. In type mode you write the capital; capital letters and accents do not matter, so Bogota and Bogotá are both right, and common spellings such as Kiev, Peking or Naypyidaw are accepted.
Some countries have more than one capital, and the quiz accepts every one of them when you type. South Africa has three: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Bolivia has Sucre as its constitutional capital and La Paz as the seat of government. The Netherlands names Amsterdam as its capital while the government sits in The Hague. Montenegro names Podgorica its capital and Cetinje its Old Royal Capital (Constitution, Article 5). Other cases are Benin (Porto-Novo and Cotonou), Burundi (Gitega and Bujumbura), Côte d'Ivoire (Yamoussoukro and Abidjan), Eswatini (Mbabane and Lobamba), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya) and Sri Lanka (Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and Colombo). In 4-choice mode one of them is shown as the right answer, normally the capital named in the country's own law, and the other is never offered as a wrong option. The data notes list which one each country uses.
The capitals are checked for 2026. Equatorial Guinea made Ciudad de la Paz its capital by decree in January 2026, with a year for state bodies to move from Malabo, so both are accepted. Indonesia has not yet moved: the Constitutional Court confirmed in May 2026 that Jakarta stays the capital until a presidential decree names Nusantara, so Jakarta is the right answer and Nusantara is not. Egypt is building a New Capital east of Cairo, but Cairo is still the capital. Kazakhstan's capital is Astana again after being called Nur-Sultan from 2019 to 2022, and Myanmar's is Nay Pyi Taw. Large cities that are not capitals are the usual traps: Sydney (Canberra), Istanbul (Ankara), Zurich (Bern), Rio de Janeiro (Brasília), Lagos (Abuja), Dar es Salaam (Dodoma) and Casablanca (Rabat).
The Learn tab lists every country with its capital, any further capitals and its region. Type part of a country or a capital to search, for example kiev, bogota or cape town, and filter by region. A good way to study is to read one region, play it with 4 choices until you reach 80%, then switch to typing, which is harder because you must recall the name. After each round the review table shows each country you missed, what you answered and the right capital, and Practise the misses starts a new round with only those countries. Your rounds, best score and number of rounds at 80% or more are stored per region in this browser only; nothing is sent anywhere. The country and capital list is a fixed set of 195, not a random question bank.
195: the 193 UN member states plus the Holy See (Vatican City) and Palestine, which are UN observer states. Africa has 54, the Americas 35, Asia 48, Europe 44 and Oceania 14.
South Africa has three: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Typing any of the three counts as right. In 4-choice mode Pretoria is the answer shown.
Yes, in 2026. The 2022 law moves the capital to Nusantara, but the Constitutional Court confirmed in May 2026 that Jakarta stays the capital until a presidential decree is issued. Nusantara is not accepted as an answer yet.
Equatorial Guinea named Ciudad de la Paz its capital by decree in January 2026, replacing Malabo, with a year to move institutions. Burundi made Gitega its political capital in 2019, and Kazakhstan renamed Nur-Sultan back to Astana in 2022.
No. Case, accents and punctuation are ignored, so Bogota matches Bogotá, san jose matches San José and St Johns matches St. John's. Spellings such as Kiev for Kyiv and Peking for Beijing are accepted too.
Scores stay in this browser's local storage, per region, and are never sent anywhere. Clearing the site data removes them, and Reset stats on the setup screen clears one region. The page only counts that a round was played, without your answers.
