Pick random countries

Pick 1 to 20 of the 195 UN member and observer states, by continent, with flags. Runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Choose how many countries and the continent
  2. Set whether countries may repeat
  3. Press the button and copy the names

What counts as a country

The list has 195 entries: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the 2 UN observer states, the Holy See and the State of Palestine. That is the whole definition. Territories and dependencies, such as Greenland, Puerto Rico or Hong Kong, are not on the list, and neither are places that are not UN members or observers. Names are short, plain forms of the UN names, written without accents, for example Cote d'Ivoire and Turkiye. Being on the list says nothing about politics beyond that rule. Each country in the pool you choose is equally likely, whatever its size.

Continents

Each country sits on exactly one continent: Africa 54, Asia 47, Europe 45, North America 23, South America 12 and Oceania 14, which adds up to 195. Where a country spans two continents, the list picks one. Russia, Cyprus and the Holy See are filed under Europe. Turkiye, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Palestine are filed under Asia. Egypt is in Africa. Mexico and the Caribbean states are in North America, and Panama is in North America too. Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific island states are in Oceania. If your game uses other borders, use All and ignore the label.

How many, repeats and the result

Ask for 1 to 20 countries. No repeats is on by default, so each country appears at most once. With it off, every country is drawn on its own and can repeat. If No repeats is on and the continent has fewer countries than you asked for, you get all of them and a note. The big answer is the first country with its flag and its two-letter ISO 3166-1 code. A table lists every pick with country, code and continent, and a text box holds the names, one per line. The page keeps the last 10 first picks of this visit.

Flags and randomness

Flags are emoji made from the country code, so they depend on your device. Phones, Macs and most browsers show a flag. Some Windows computers show the two letters of the code instead, and that is the system, not an error. The draw uses your browser's secure random source when available, and falls back to the browser's ordinary random function when it is not. Nothing is sent anywhere. Your options are remembered in this browser; the countries are not. It suits geography quizzes, trip ideas and classroom games.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are there in the list?

There are 195: the 193 UN member states plus the Holy See and the State of Palestine, which are UN observer states. Territories such as Greenland or Puerto Rico are not included.

Why is Taiwan, Kosovo or Greenland not listed?

The list follows one rule: UN members and observers. Taiwan and Kosovo are not UN members or observers, and Greenland is a territory of Denmark. The rule keeps the list the same for everyone and does not take a position on other places.

Which continent is Russia, Turkiye or Egypt in?

Russia is filed under Europe, Turkiye under Asia and Egypt under Africa. Each country has one continent in this tool, even when it spans two. Pick All if you do not want to filter.

Why do I see letters instead of a flag?

Flags are emoji built from the country code, and some systems, mostly Windows, do not draw country flags. You then see the two letters, such as FR. The name and the code are always correct.

Does it keep my picks or send them anywhere?

No. The countries are made in this tab and stay in this tab. Only your options, such as the count and the continent, are saved in this browser. The page counts visits with Google Analytics, and that count never includes anything you picked.
