Type a word and get big letters drawn with plain characters, in 10 FIGlet fonts. Copy it or download it. Nothing leaves your browser.
Each letter in a FIGlet font is a small picture drawn with ordinary keyboard characters, a few rows tall. The tool looks up the picture for every character you type, places the pictures side by side and prints them row by row. The word Hi in the Standard font becomes 5 rows, 9 characters wide: a tall H made of underscores and bars, followed by an i with a dotted top. Because the result is plain text, you can paste it into a code comment, a README, a terminal banner or a chat message, as long as the place you paste into uses a monospaced font. In a proportional font the columns drift and the letters fall apart.
FIGlet fonts say how close their letters may sit, and the default choice follows the font, as the figlet program does. Smushing lets two neighbouring letters share a column when their characters agree under a rule: two equal characters become one, an underscore gives way to a bar or slash, brackets and slashes follow a fixed order of strength, a pair such as [ and ] becomes a bar, and a slash followed by a backslash becomes a bar. Fitted pushes letters together until they touch without overlapping. Full width keeps each letter in its whole box, so there is a gap, which reads better in some fonts and takes more room. The layout code is a port of the figlet 2.2.5 layout code, and the results were compared with the real figlet program for all 10 fonts, the three spacing modes and the three alignments.
The width limit is in characters, from 20 to 200, with 80 as the default. When the next letter would not fit, the line breaks at the last space and the rest continues below. A single word that is too long is broken between letters. If one letter on its own is wider than the limit, that row is cut and a note tells you to raise the width. Center and right alignment pad each row with spaces so the art sits in the middle or at the right edge of the width you chose. Trailing spaces are removed from every row, and so are blank rows at the very end. A new line in your text starts a new line of art, and an empty line leaves one blank band.
The 10 fonts are Standard, Big, Slant, Small, Small Slant, Shadow, Mini, Block, Banner and Script, taken from the figlet 2.2.5 distribution, which is released under the BSD 3-clause licence. Only the characters on a US keyboard, the 95 printable ASCII characters from space to tilde, are included, so accented letters, other alphabets and emoji are skipped and the note says how many. The tool does not turn pictures into ASCII art, and it does not add colour. Input is limited to 500 characters. Everything is computed in your browser; the text is not uploaded or stored, and only your font, spacing, width and alignment choices are remembered.
Type your text in the box, choose a font and copy the result. For example, Hi in the Standard font gives 5 rows of underscores, bars and brackets, 9 characters wide. Paste it somewhere that uses a monospaced font.
The place you pasted into is using a proportional font, where an i is narrower than an M. Switch that text to a monospaced font such as Courier, or put the art inside a code block. In Markdown, indent each row by 4 spaces or fence it with three backticks.
Full width keeps a gap between letters. Fitted lets letters touch. Font default uses the spacing rule written into the font, which may also let letters share a column, so it is usually the narrowest. Hi in Standard is 9 characters wide with the font default and 12 with full width.
Leave the width limit at 80. Long text then wraps at spaces onto the next band of rows. If a long word still does not fit, choose a smaller font such as Small or Mini, which are 5 and 4 rows tall.
Each font here holds the 95 printable ASCII characters, from space to tilde. Accented letters, Chinese or Arabic text and emoji have no picture in these fonts, so they are left out and the note shows how many were skipped.
No. The text is processed in your browser and not uploaded. The fonts are part of this page. Your font, spacing, width and alignment choices are saved in this browser, the text is not.
