Average calculator

Paste a list of numbers and get the mean, median, mode, range and sum. Exact arithmetic, on your device.

How it works

  1. Type or paste your numbers
  2. Choose the sort order of the list
  3. Read the mean, median and mode

What you can type

Separate numbers with commas, semicolons, spaces, tabs or new lines, in any mix. A number is an optional + or - sign (a Unicode minus also works), digits and an optional decimal point, so 12, -3.5, +7, .5 and 5. are all read. Not accepted: thousands commas, because a comma always separates numbers (1,000 is read as 1 and 0); a decimal comma (3,5 is 3 and 5); scientific notation such as 1e3; and fractions such as 1/2. Anything else is skipped and counted. The page tells you how many entries were skipped, for example 2 entries were not numbers, but never repeats what you typed. A number can have up to 40 characters, and a list can hold up to 100,000 numbers.

How each figure is worked out

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value of the sorted list, or the mean of the two middle values when the count is even: for 12, 7, 3, 7, 18, 9 the sorted list is 3, 7, 7, 9, 12, 18, so the median is (7 + 9) ÷ 2 = 8 and the mean is 56 ÷ 6 = 9.3333333333. The mode is the value that appears most often. When several values tie for most, all are listed, and when every value appears once the page says No mode. The range is the largest minus the smallest. Values such as 2.50 and 2.5 count as the same number.

Exact decimals and rounding

Every figure is worked out on the digits you typed, not on binary floating-point numbers, so 0.1 + 0.2 is exactly 0.3 and a sum of 999999999999999999 and 1 is exactly 1000000000000000000. Sums, range, smallest and largest are exact. The mean and median are rounded to 10 decimal places, halves away from zero, only when they do not end sooner; the page then adds a note. It needs a browser with BigInt support, which every current browser has. If one lacks it, the page says so instead of showing floating-point guesses.

The sorted list

The sorted list repeats your valid numbers in order, one per line, smallest first or largest first, with duplicates kept and trailing zeros removed. It is a text box you can copy. Only the sort order is remembered on your device; the numbers you type are not stored and are never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the mean, median and mode of 3, 7, 7, 9, 12 and 18?

Add them: 56. The mean is 56 ÷ 6 = 9.3333333333. The two middle values are 7 and 9, so the median is 8. The value 7 appears twice and every other value once, so the mode is 7. The range is 18 - 3 = 15.

What does No mode mean?

Every value in the list appears the same number of times, usually once, so no value is more common than the others. A list such as 1, 1, 2, 2 has two modes, 1 and 2, because they tie for most often.

Why is 1,000 read as two numbers?

A comma separates numbers here, so 1,000 becomes 1 and 0. Type 1000 without the comma. The same rule means a decimal comma such as 3,5 is read as 3 and 5; write 3.5 instead.

Does the average ignore text and blanks?

Yes. Blank lines and extra separators are skipped silently, and any entry that is not a number is skipped and counted in a note, such as 1 entry was not a number. If nothing in the list is a number you get a message instead of a result.

Is the answer exact for decimals?

Sums, range and the extremes are exact. The mean and median are cut to 10 decimal places when they do not end sooner, and the page says when that happened. For 1, 1 and 2 the mean is 1.3333333333.

How many numbers can I paste?

Up to 100,000 numbers, and up to 1,000,000 characters of text. Past that the page asks you to split the list into parts.
