Emoji copy and paste, with search

Search 1,914 Unicode 17.0 emoji plus skin tones by name and click to copy. Mixed-tone pairs are not included. Nothing you search is sent or saved.

How it works

  1. Search by name or choose a category
  2. Pick a skin tone if the emoji takes one
  3. Click an emoji to copy it, or collect several in Your picks

How the emoji picker works

To copy an emoji, search for it by name or browse a category, then click it: the emoji goes to your clipboard and is added to the box called Your picks. The list is the 1,914 emoji of Unicode 17.0 that have a complete form of their own, in the order the Unicode Consortium uses for emoji keyboards, with the official short names. Search needs every word of your query to appear in the name, in any order, and ranks an exact name first, then names that start with your words, then names where a word starts with them, then names that only contain them. Press Tab once to reach the grid, move with the arrow keys, Home and End, and press Enter or Space to copy. Each emoji button is named for screen readers by its Unicode name.

Search by name, not by feeling

Search matches the official Unicode short name only. 'grinning face', 'rocket', 'red heart' and 'flag: japan' work. A word such as 'happy' or 'love' does not, because related keywords are not part of the data used here, so try the plain thing you see in the picture. Names are lower case. A search of 'man' lists the exact name 'man' first, then 'man dancing' and the other names that start with it, then names such as 'woman' that only contain it. Categories are the nine Unicode groups: Smileys and Emotion, People and Body, Animals and Nature, Food and Drink, Travel and Places, Activities, Objects, Symbols and Flags.

Skin tones and how they are made

330 emoji take a skin tone, such as hands and people. Pick Light, Medium-light, Medium, Medium-dark or Dark and every one of them changes at once; the others stay as they are. The tone is a modifier character placed right after the person in the sequence, so the thumbs up (U+1F44D) with a medium tone is U+1F44D followed by U+1F3FD. For pairs such as two people holding hands, the same tone is used on both people, and mixed-tone pairs are not offered. Your tone choice is the only thing this page remembers on your device.

Your picks and recently used

Every click adds the emoji to Your picks, in order, repeats included, up to 500. Copy all puts the whole string on the clipboard, and Clear picks empties it. Recently used shows the last 24 different emoji you clicked, newest first. Both live in this tab's memory only: they disappear when you reload or press Reset, and nothing you search, click or copy is stored or sent. If your browser refuses to copy, the page says so and the emoji is still in Your picks, where you can select it and copy it by hand.

What looks different on your device

The page sends emoji characters, not pictures, so how an emoji looks depends on the font of your phone, computer or app, and an emoji that is new in Unicode 17.0 shows as a box or a blank on a device that is older than that. The copy is the Unicode character itself, so it pastes as text into most messages, documents and forms. Some places, for example a plain-text field with a limited character set, may not accept emoji at all.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy and paste an emoji?

Click the emoji in the grid. It is copied at once and added to Your picks, then paste it with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. To copy several in one go, click them in order and press Copy all.

Why does searching for 'happy' find nothing?

Search matches the official Unicode name only, such as 'grinning face' or 'smiling face with smiling eyes'. Related words and feelings are not searched. Try the name of what the picture shows, or browse the Smileys and Emotion category.

How do I change the skin tone of an emoji?

Choose a tone under Skin tone. The 330 emoji that take one, such as the thumbs up, change to Light, Medium-light, Medium, Medium-dark or Dark. For example, thumbs up in the medium-dark tone is U+1F44D followed by U+1F3FE.

Why do I see a box instead of an emoji?

Your device's font does not have it yet. The page lists Unicode 17.0, and a phone or computer with older software cannot draw the newest emoji. The copy is still the correct character, so it shows properly on a device that has the font.

How many emoji are there, and are flags included?

1,914 emoji from Unicode 17.0, in nine groups, with the Flags group holding the country and regional flags. Skin-tone versions are made from the 330 base emoji, so they are not counted again in the list.

Is what I search for saved or sent?

No. The text is processed in your browser and not uploaded. Your searches, picks and recently used emoji stay in this tab's memory and are gone when you reload; only your skin tone choice is kept on this device.
