FD calculator (fixed deposit maturity amount)

Work out a fixed deposit's maturity amount, interest and yield, with a table by year. Runs on your device.

How it works

  1. Type the deposit amount, the annual rate and the tenure in years, months and days
  2. Pick how often interest is added, or simple interest paid at maturity
  3. Read the maturity amount, interest, yield and the balance for each year

How the maturity amount is worked out

A fixed deposit's maturity amount is the deposit times (1 + rate ÷ n) raised to the power n × t, where n is how many times a year interest is added and t is the tenure in years. For 100,000 at 7% for 3 years with quarterly compounding, n is 4, so the amount is 100,000 × (1 + 0.07 ÷ 4)^(4 × 3) = 123,143.93, and the interest is 23,143.93. The tenure is read as years + months ÷ 12 + days ÷ 365, so 18 months is 1.5 years and 90 days is about 0.2466 years. The box under the answer repeats each step with your own numbers, and the table lists the opening balance, interest and closing balance for every year.

Compounding choices and the effective yield

The same 100,000 at 7% for 3 years gives 123,292.56 with monthly interest, 123,143.93 quarterly, 122,925.53 half-yearly and 122,504.30 yearly. Quarterly is often used for bank fixed deposits in India, but banks differ, so check your deposit terms. The effective annual yield is (1 + rate ÷ n)^n − 1: 7.23% for monthly, 7.19% for quarterly and 7.00% for yearly, all on a stated rate of 7%. The simple option uses A = P × (1 + r × t) and accrues interest in a straight line on the original deposit without compounding, so each year's closing balance in the table is the deposit plus the interest accrued so far (107,000, 114,000, then 121,000 at maturity).00 for the same deposit. Its yield is shown as the yearly rate that would grow the deposit to the same amount, 6.56%.

Tax on the interest

If you type a tax rate, the page takes that percent of the total interest at maturity and shows what is left. At 10% on 23,143.93 of interest the tax is 2,314.39, the interest after tax is 20,829.54 and the amount received is 120,829.54. The after-tax yield for that example works out to 6.51% a year. This is a flat percent that you supply. The page does not know any country's tax rules, thresholds or exemptions, and it does not model tax taken every year or at the source. Leave the box empty to see the interest before tax.

What this estimate does not cover

Real deposits differ in small ways. A bank may count days differently, round each period, or pay simple interest for a part period instead of the fractional power used here, so a tenure that is not a whole number of periods can differ by a small amount. The table is before tax and does not model interest paid out monthly or quarterly instead of being added back, which is a different product with a lower maturity amount. Premature withdrawal penalties, senior rates and variable rates are not modelled. Tenure is limited to 50 years, and the result is an estimate, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the maturity amount of a fixed deposit?

Use A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t). For 100,000 at 7% for 3 years with interest added quarterly, A = 100,000 × (1 + 0.07 ÷ 4)^12 = 123,143.93. The page shows each step with your own numbers.

Which compounding should I choose for an FD?

Use the one in your deposit terms. Quarterly is often used for bank fixed deposits in India, but banks differ. On 100,000 at 7% for 3 years, monthly gives 123,292.56 and quarterly gives 123,143.93, a gap of 148.63.

What is the difference between the rate and the effective annual yield?

The rate is the stated yearly figure; the yield is what a year of compounding actually returns. A 7% rate added quarterly has a yield of (1 + 0.07 ÷ 4)^4 − 1 = 7.19%. Added yearly, the yield stays 7.00%.

How do I add tax to an FD calculation?

Type your tax rate in the optional box. It is applied as a flat percent of the total interest. At 10% on 23,143.93 of interest, tax is 2,314.39 and you receive 120,829.54. The page applies no country's tax rules.

Can I enter a tenure in days, such as 90 or 400 days?

Yes. Days are divided by 365 and added to years and months, so 90 days is 0.2466 years and 1 year plus 35 days is 1.0959 years. Tenure can be up to 50 years.

Are my deposit amount and rate stored or sent anywhere?

No. The numbers stay in this tab and are not stored on your device or sent anywhere. Reloading the page puts the example back. The page only counts that a result was shown, without any of your numbers.
