Flip an image horizontally or vertically

Turn, flip or straighten photos. Runs on your device.

A flip makes a mirror image, and there are two common reasons to want one. Depending on the phone and its settings, a selfie can be saved mirrored, so a sign or a shirt logo in it reads backwards. Flip horizontally swaps left and right and puts the words the right way round again. Flip vertically swaps top and bottom, which suits a picture that is upside down in a mirror-like way, such as a reflection you want to read the other way up. This page opens with Flip horizontally ticked and No turn selected, so one press of Rotate does the common job. Flipping a PNG is exact when the result fits your device's canvas, because every pixel just moves to its mirrored place, with no blur. A JPEG or WebP is saved again at quality 92, so it is not identical to the original file. You can add up to 50 images and they all get the same flip. This page cannot tell which flip you need, so check the preview first.

How it works

  1. Add your images
  2. Choose a turn, flip or angle
  3. Download

Turning and flipping

A turn moves the picture around by a quarter: 90 degrees right, 180 degrees, or 90 degrees left. A flip makes a mirror image, left to right (Flip horizontally) or top to bottom (Flip vertically). Flips always act on the picture as it looks after the turn, so Flip horizontally always swaps what you see on the left and right. This page opens with 90 degrees right selected, so a sideways photo is fixed by pressing Rotate. Every image you add gets the same change. If one photo needs a different turn from the others, add it on its own. The preview above the list shows the first image with the change already applied, and Previous and Next let you look at the rest.

Straightening: crop to fit or expand canvas

Straightening turns the picture by a small angle, from -45 to 45 degrees in steps of 0.1. Positive angles turn clockwise. Turning a rectangle leaves empty triangles in the corners, and you choose what to do about them. Crop to fit cuts the picture down to the largest rectangle that still lies inside the turned image, so no empty corner remains but some of the edges are lost. A 4000 by 3000 photo straightened by 5 degrees becomes 3780 by 2680 pixels. Expand canvas keeps every pixel and makes the canvas bigger, filling the corners with a colour you pick, or with transparency for PNG and WebP. The same photo becomes 4247 by 3338 pixels. At 45 degrees, Crop to fit always gives a square: 4000 by 3000 becomes 2121 by 2121.

What happens to the file

Phones often store a photo sideways and add a small orientation flag that says how to show it. Some apps respect the flag and some ignore it, which is why a picture can look upright on your phone and sideways elsewhere. This tool reads the flag first, so a photo opens the way it looks on your phone, and the turn you choose is added on top of that. The saved file has its pixels physically turned and carries no orientation flag, so it looks the same in every app. A JPEG or WebP is saved again at quality 92, so it is not byte for byte the original, and repeated saving lowers quality a little each time. A PNG is saved without loss. When the result fits your device's canvas, a 90 degree turn or a flip of a PNG moves every pixel exactly, with no blur. Photo details such as location and camera model are not kept. Nothing is uploaded, because the work happens in this tab.

What this tool does not do

It does not give each photo its own angle, it does not offer drag handles to turn the picture by hand, and it does not find the horizon for you. It also does not change the file format, so a JPEG stays a JPEG. To cut a specific part of a picture, use the crop tool. To change the pixel size, use the resize tool. The largest picture depends on your device: up to 50 images per batch, and an output that is too big for this browser's canvas is made smaller to fit, with a notice before you start.

Frequently asked questions

My selfie text is backwards. Which flip fixes it?

Flip horizontally. It swaps left and right, so a sign or a shirt logo reads the right way round. Check the preview above the list before you press Rotate, because a photo taken with the rear camera usually does not need it.

When do I need Flip vertically?

Use it when top and bottom are swapped but left and right are correct, such as a reflection in water that you want to read the other way up. For a picture that is simply upside down, the 180 degree turn is the better choice, because a 180 degree turn does not mirror the text.

Does flipping a PNG change its quality?

No. Each pixel moves to its mirrored position without blending, so a flipped PNG has exactly the same pixels in a new order, unless the picture is so large that your device makes it smaller. A JPEG is the exception: it is saved again at quality 92 and loses a little.

Is rotating a JPEG lossless here?

No. The tool draws the turned picture and saves a new JPEG at quality 92, so the file is not byte for byte the original and a second pass loses a little more. A PNG turned by 90 or 180 degrees keeps every pixel exactly, as long as the result fits your device's canvas.

Why is my photo smaller after straightening?

Crop to fit removes the corners that a turned picture leaves empty. A 4000 by 3000 photo straightened by 5 degrees comes out at 3780 by 2680 pixels. Choose Expand canvas to keep every pixel of the original, at the price of colour or transparency in the corners.

Can I rotate each photo differently?

No. Every image in a batch gets the same turn, flip and angle. Add a photo that needs something else on its own, after the first batch is done.

Does it keep EXIF and GPS details?

No. The saved file is drawn fresh from the pixels, so location, camera model and the orientation flag are not kept. The picture itself is turned, so it looks the same everywhere.

What is the largest image it can handle?

You can add up to 50 images at a time. One image can be up to 100 megapixels on a computer or 50 on a phone. If the result would be too big for this browser's canvas, it is made smaller to fit and a notice shows the real size before you press Rotate.

Does it work offline after the page has loaded?

Partly. Turning, flipping and downloading one image need no connection once this page is open. The Try a sample button fetches two sample photos, and the first Download all (.zip) loads a small extra file, so do those once while you are online.
