Keyboard tester: test every key online

Press keys and watch them light up on a 104-key layout. See key codes and how many keys you can hold at once.

How it works

  1. Click the key area, or Tab to it
  2. Press every key you want to check
  3. Hold several keys to see the rollover count

How the keyboard test works

A keyboard tester shows a key as pressed when the browser reports a key event for it, so click the key area, press a key, and its tile on the 104-key layout is marked. A tile you pressed once stays marked until you clear the test, so you can work through the keyboard and see at a glance which keys never responded. Keys are matched by the event code, which names the physical position, such as KeyA or Numpad5. That is why the layout is the same on a French, German or Dvorak keyboard: the key in the A position lights the A tile whatever character it types. The log shows the character as well, as the key value.

Reading the event log

The log keeps the last 20 events, newest first. Each row has the event (keydown or keyup), the code, the key value, the location and whether it was an auto-repeat. Location says which copy of a key was used: left or right for Shift, Ctrl, Alt and the Windows or Command key, and Number pad for the numeric keypad, so the two Enter keys can be told apart. Repeat is yes while you hold a key and the system sends repeats. Holding Space for a second adds a run of repeat rows. Copy log puts the rows on the clipboard as tab-separated text.

Ghosting and the most keys held at once

Some keyboards, mostly cheap ones wired as a simple matrix, cannot report certain combinations of keys at once. A key you hold simply produces no event, which is ghosting. This page counts the most keys that were down together and reported, shown as Most held at once. If you hold six keys and the count stops at four, the fifth and sixth were never reported. Many full keyboards report all keys at once, called N-key rollover, and some report only six. The result also depends on the cable or adapter and the system. This test cannot tell a keyboard fault from an operating system limit, and it only shows what reached the page.

Keys that do not light up

Some keys never reach a web page. The Windows key usually opens the Start menu, and on a Mac some Command combinations are taken by the system. Fn is handled inside the keyboard and sends nothing, and many volume, brightness and media keys go to the operating system. Keys that are not on a US layout, such as the extra key next to the left Shift on a European keyboard, are listed under Other keys seen. While the test area has focus the page stops Space, the arrow keys, Page Up, Page Down, Home, End, Backspace, F5, the slash and the apostrophe from scrolling or navigating. Tab and Esc are never blocked, so you can always leave the area, and shortcuts with Ctrl or Command still work. Nothing you press is saved or sent.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a key not light up on the keyboard tester?

Either the key is not working, or it never reaches the browser. The Windows key, Fn and many media keys are taken by the system or the keyboard. Click the key area first, because a key pressed while another part of the page has focus is not counted.

What is N-key rollover and how do I check it?

It is how many keys a keyboard can report pressed together. Hold keys down one after another, for example A, S, D, F, G, H, and read Most held at once. If it stops at 6 while you hold more, the keyboard or its connection reports no more than six.

Why does the tester show a US layout on my German or French keyboard?

Keys are matched by their position, the code, not by the letter printed on them. The key where US keyboards have Y is KeyY on every layout. The log shows the real character as Key, so a German press of that position reads z.

What is the difference between Enter and Numpad Enter?

They send different codes, Enter and NumpadEnter, and the log shows Standard or Number pad as the location. Each has its own tile on the layout, so you can check them one at a time.

How do I test a keyboard on a laptop with no number pad?

Press the keys you have. The number pad tiles stay unmarked, and Keys pressed shows a count such as 87 of 104, which is the 104-key layout minus its 17 number pad keys. A laptop without a number pad cannot reach 104, so judge it by the keys it does have.

Are my key presses recorded?

No. Keys are read in your browser, in this tab, only while the test area has focus, and no server receives them. Nothing is saved, and the page counts visits with Google Analytics, never what you press.
