Overtime calculator

Work out overtime pay from your rate and hours, with the US federal weekly 40-hour rule.

How it works

  1. Choose how overtime is counted and enter your hourly rate or yearly salary
  2. Enter your hours and pick the overtime multiplier
  3. Read total pay, overtime pay and the pay for each tier

How overtime pay is calculated

Overtime pay is the overtime hours multiplied by your hourly rate and by the overtime multiplier, added to your regular pay. At 20.00 an hour with 40 regular hours and 8 overtime hours at 1.5x, regular pay is 800.00, overtime pay is 8 x 20.00 x 1.5 = 240.00, and the total is 1,040.00. The multiplier is editable because it differs between countries, contracts and employers: 1.25x, 1.5x (time and a half), 2x (double time) or any value from 1 to 10. The page shows no currency symbol, so it works for any currency. Choose Yearly salary to turn a salary into an hourly rate first: the page divides by 52 weeks and the hours per week the salary covers, so 52,000 a year at 40 hours is 25.00 an hour.

The US federal rule

Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, covered employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek, according to the US Department of Labor (Fact Sheet #23). A workweek is a fixed, recurring period of 168 hours, seven 24-hour days. It does not have to be the calendar week, and hours cannot be averaged across two weeks. Use the Weekly threshold mode: enter total hours for the week and the threshold of 40. At 48 hours and 20.00 an hour, 40 hours are regular and 8 hours are overtime. The Department of Labor also gives a salary example: a 405 weekly salary for 45 hours is a regular rate of 9.00, and the 5 overtime hours need an extra half-time of 4.50 each, 22.50 in total.

Salaried workers and covered hours

For a non-exempt salaried worker whose salary covers a fixed number of hours, the regular rate is the weekly salary divided by those hours, according to the US Department of Labor (Fact Sheet #23, 29 CFR 778.113). The salary already pays straight time for every covered hour, so only the extra half-time is owed on hours over 40. A yearly salary of 21,060 is 405.00 a week; covering 45 hours, the regular rate is 9.00, and working 45 hours pays 405.00 + 5 x 4.50 = 427.50, which is 22.50 more than straight time. Choose Yearly salary, enter the hours per week the salary covers, and use the Weekly threshold mode with total hours and a threshold of 40. The page divides the salary by 52 weeks and the covered hours, then pays hours over the threshold at the multiplier. This matches the Department of Labor example.

What the calculator leaves out

The result is before tax and deductions, and it is an estimate, not payroll or legal advice. State rules are not covered: for example California daily overtime (overtime after 8 hours in a day) and alternative workweeks, which differ from the federal weekly rule. It also leaves out exemptions, which depend on your duties and pay, bonuses, shift differentials and commissions that raise the regular rate on which overtime is based, meal-break premiums, and collective agreements or rest-day rules in other countries. If your state or contract sets a different threshold or multiplier, use the Regular + overtime hours mode with your own multiplier. Check your pay slip and your local labour department for the rule that applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At 20.00 an hour, time and a half is 30.00 an hour. For 8 overtime hours that is 8 x 30.00 = 240.00, which you add to your regular pay.

When does overtime start in the US?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, overtime starts after 40 hours in a workweek and is paid at no less than 1.5 times the regular rate. Federal law does not require overtime for weekends or holidays as such. Some states add daily rules, which this calculator does not cover.

How is overtime worked out for a salary covering 45 hours?

Divide the weekly salary by the covered hours for the regular rate, then add half-time for hours over 40. A 405 weekly salary for 45 hours is 9.00 an hour; 5 overtime hours add 5 x 4.50 = 22.50, so pay is 427.50 (DOL Fact Sheet #23).

How do I turn a salary into an overtime rate?

Choose Yearly salary and enter the hours per week it covers. The page divides the salary by 52 weeks times those hours. A 52,000 salary covering 40 hours is 25.00 an hour, so time and a half is 37.50 an hour.

Is double time the same as 2x my rate?

Yes. Double time pays 2 times the hourly rate for each hour in that tier, so 20.00 an hour becomes 40.00. Pick 2x in the multiplier. Daily double time under state rules is not modelled.

Does this include tax?

No. All amounts are before tax and deductions. Overtime is taxed with the rest of your pay, so take-home pay is lower. Type a deduction-adjusted rate yourself if you want a rough after-tax figure.
