Resize PDF pages to A4, Letter or a custom size

Fit every page of a PDF onto A4, Letter, Legal, A3, A5 or your own size.

How it works

  1. Add your PDF
  2. Pick the new page size
  3. Download the resized PDF

What happens to each page

Every page is placed on a new blank sheet of the size you pick and scaled by one factor, so the shape of the content never changes. The factor is the largest one that fits inside the margin, which means a Letter page on A4 is scaled by 97% and is centred, with a thin strip of blank paper above and below. A page smaller than the sheet is scaled up, and a larger one down. Nothing is cropped and nothing is stretched. The line above the button tells you how far the first page is scaled, for example 97%, before you run anything. The sizes offered are A4 (210 × 297 mm), Letter (8.5 × 11 in), Legal (8.5 × 14 in), A3 (297 × 420 mm) and A5 (148 × 210 mm). Custom takes a width and a height in millimetres or inches, from 25.4 mm (1 in) to 200 in.

Orientation and margins

Auto keeps each page's own shape: a landscape page gets a landscape sheet and a portrait page gets a portrait one, so a PDF that mixes both stays mixed but every sheet has the same paper size. Portrait or landscape forces all the sheets one way, and a page of the other shape is then scaled down to fit, with blank bands beside or above it. Square pages count as portrait. For a custom size, the shorter number is always the short side, so it does not matter which box holds the larger value. The margin is the space kept free on all four sides, from 0 up to the point where the sheet would have less than a quarter of an inch left for the page. Pages stored with a rotation, such as a sideways scan, are turned upright before they are placed.

What is kept and what is not

The visible content of each page is copied onto the new sheet: text stays text that can be selected and searched, and pictures keep their quality. If a page had a crop box, only the visible part is used. The file is built fresh, so things that belong to the document rather than to the page's drawing are not carried over: links, form fields, comments, bookmarks and the document title and author. A blank page stays blank. The tool does not change the pixels of a scan or re-draw anything as a picture, and a scan stays a scan. The page size and the file size are separate things. The output holds the same content, so its size is about the same as the original. To make a PDF lighter, run the result through Compress PDF.

Limits and privacy

The PDF is read and written by your browser in this tab. There is no upload step and no server that receives the file. The page counts visits with Google Analytics, using rough size groups such as 1 to 10 MB, never a file name or a page count. The tool warns before opening a PDF over 200 MB or with more than 1000 pages, and it works on one file at a time. Passwords are not removed: a protected PDF is refused with a message asking you to take the password off first. Pages are copied one at a time and Cancel stops after the page in progress, in which case nothing is saved, because the new file is only complete when every page is done.

Frequently asked questions

Does this make the file smaller?

No. Every page is copied onto a new sheet with the same text and pictures, so the file size stays about the same. To make a PDF lighter, use Compress PDF on the result.

How do I make all pages the same size?

Choose one size, such as A4, and leave Orientation on Auto. Every page then gets an A4 sheet, landscape for wide pages and portrait for tall ones, with the content scaled evenly to fit. Choose Portrait if you want every sheet portrait.

Will a Letter PDF look different on A4?

Slightly. Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm and A4 is 210 × 297 mm, so the page is scaled by 97% to fit the width and sits centred with a little blank space at the top and bottom. Nothing is cut off.

Why is there white space around my page?

The page keeps its shape, so when it is not the same shape as the sheet the extra space shows as bands. The margin adds more. Set the margin to 0 and choose Auto orientation to leave the least blank paper.

Are my links and form fields kept?

No. Each page is drawn onto a new sheet as content, so links, form fields and comments are not copied. Text stays real text. If you need the links, edit the original instead.

Can I use a size that is not in the list?

Yes. Choose Custom and type a width and a height, from 25.4 mm (1 in) to 5080 mm (200 in). For a 5 × 7 in page, switch the unit to inches and type 5 and 7.
