Turn a title into a URL slug

Paste titles, one per line, and get clean URL slugs. Nothing leaves your browser.

How it works

  1. Paste one title per line
  2. Choose separator, case and length
  3. Copy the slugs

What happens to each line

Every line is turned into its own slug, in the same order, so a list of 40 titles gives 40 slugs. The steps run in a fixed order. Accents are taken off Latin letters, so café becomes cafe and São Paulo becomes sao-paulo. Apostrophes are deleted instead of replaced, so it's becomes its, not it-s. Then, if Lower case is on, capitals become small letters. Every other run of characters that is not a letter or a digit, such as spaces, punctuation, slashes, ampersands and emoji, becomes one separator. Separators are never doubled and never appear at the start or end. A blank line gives a blank line, so the output still lines up with your input.

Letters that are kept

Only accents on Latin letters are removed. Letters from other scripts are kept as they are, so a Russian, Greek, Arabic, Hindi or Chinese title keeps its own letters and only the spaces and symbols change. Many browsers accept such addresses, but some tools and older systems show them as long percent codes, so check where the slug will be used. Latin letters that are not an accent plus a letter, such as ß, ø, æ and ł, are also kept, because Unicode does not split them. If you need those turned into ss, o, ae and l, run the text through the remove accents tool first. Digits are kept, so 2026 stays 2026. For other styles, such as camelCase or snake_case, use the case converter.

Max length and common words

Max length counts the characters of the finished slug, separators included. 0 means no limit. When a slug is too long, whole words are dropped from the end until it fits, so you never get half a word. A single first word that is longer than the limit is cut to the limit, because otherwise the line would be empty. Drop common English words is off by default. When on, it removes these 21 words wherever they appear in a title: a, an, and, are, as, at, be, by, for, from, in, is, it, of, on, or, that, the, to, was, with. If a title is made only of those words, they are kept, so you do not get an empty slug. Words are not stemmed or translated, and only English words are removed.

Limits

Titles up to 1,000,000 characters are handled. Longer text shows a message asking you to split it. The work happens in this tab and no server receives your titles. The text is not saved or put in the page address, and only your choices, such as underscore, are remembered in this browser. The tool does not check whether a slug is already used on your site, and it does not add a date, an ID or a number to make slugs unique. Two titles that differ only in punctuation give the same slug.

Frequently asked questions

Hyphen or underscore: which should I choose?

Hyphen is the usual choice for page addresses, and Google's own guidance uses hyphens as word separators in URLs. Underscore suits file names, database keys and code identifiers. The tool defaults to hyphen. Switch to underscore when the slug is a name for a file or a field, such as report_2026_q3.

What max length should I use?

There is no fixed rule. Many sites keep slugs under about 60 characters so the full address shows in search results. Set 60 and a long title is cut at the last whole word that fits. Leave it at 0 to keep every word.

Why does my slug still have non-English letters?

Only accents on Latin letters are removed. Letters from other alphabets, such as Cyrillic or Chinese, are kept on purpose, and so are ß, ø, æ and ł. To change those four to ss, o, ae and l, use the remove accents tool first, then paste the result here.

What happens to an apostrophe or an ampersand?

An apostrophe is deleted, so don't gives dont. An ampersand is a symbol, so it becomes a separator like any other: Q&A gives q-a, and Tom & Jerry gives tom-jerry. The word and is only dropped when you turn on Drop common English words.

Are my titles uploaded?

No. The slugs are made in your browser, in this tab, and no server receives your titles. Your settings are saved in this browser, but the text is not, so closing the tab clears it.
