Square footage calculator: area in ft², m², yd² and acres

Add up to 10 rectangles, triangles, circles and trapezoids and get the total area in square feet, metres, yards, acres and hectares.

How it works

  1. Pick feet, inches, yards, metres or centimetres
  2. Choose a shape for each area and type its sizes
  3. Read the total in ft², m², yd², acres and hectares, and the cost if you add a price

How square footage is worked out

Square footage is the area of a surface measured in square feet. For a rectangle it is length × width, so a room 12 ft by 10 ft is 120 ft². The page opens on that room plus a triangular nook with a base of 6 ft and a height of 4 ft, which is ½ × 6 × 4 = 12 ft². The total is 132 ft², which is 12.26 m², 14.67 yd², 0.00303 acres and 0.001226 hectares. Each area's working is written in the box How this was worked out, so you can check it against a tape measure. Type the sizes in feet, inches, yards, metres or centimetres. All areas use the same unit.

Shapes and the formulas used

A rectangle or square is length × width. A triangle is ½ × base × height. A circle is π × (diameter ÷ 2)², so a circle 10 ft across is 78.54 ft². A trapezoid, which has two parallel sides, is ½ × (side a + side b) × height: with sides 6 and 10 and a height of 4 the area is 32. There is no L-shape option. Split an L-shaped room into two rectangles and enter them as two areas: 20 ft by 10 ft plus 8 ft by 6 ft is 200 + 48 = 248 ft². You can add up to 10 areas. A row whose sizes are all empty is skipped.

Subtracting areas and adding a cost

Tick Subtract on an area to take it away from the total, for a cut-out such as a 3 ft by 2 ft hearth in a 12 ft by 10 ft floor: 120 − 6 = 114 ft². If the areas you subtract are larger than the ones you add, the page shows a message and no total. To price a job, type a price per unit area and choose ft², yd² or m². At 4.50 per ft², 132 ft² costs 594.00. The cost is only the area times your price. It leaves out waste, cuts, tax and delivery, so add those to the price or the area yourself.

Conversions and rounding

Everything is converted through square metres with exact factors: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m², 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m² and 1 hectare = 10,000 m². An acre is therefore 43,560 ft². Areas are shown with up to 2 decimals and acres and hectares with up to 6, so a small room shows a small acre figure. The page measures flat, rectangular and similar plan areas. It does not allow for sloping ground, walls, or the thickness of materials, and a surveyed land area can differ from a sum of simple shapes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the square footage of a room?

Multiply the length by the width in feet. A room 12 ft by 10 ft is 120 ft². For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles, such as 20 ft by 10 ft and 8 ft by 6 ft, and add them: 200 + 48 = 248 ft².

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply square feet by 0.09290304. 132 ft² is 132 × 0.09290304 = 12.26 m². Going the other way, divide square metres by 0.09290304. Type the sizes in feet or metres and the page shows both totals.

How do I find the area of a triangular or round part of a floor?

A triangle is ½ × base × height, so a base of 6 ft and a height of 4 ft is 12 ft². A circle is π × (diameter ÷ 2)², so a 10 ft round rug area is 78.54 ft². Choose the shape for that area and type the sizes.

How many square feet are in an acre?

43,560 square feet, which is 4,046.8564224 square metres. A hectare is 10,000 m², about 2.47 acres. Type a plot in feet, yards or metres and the total is shown in acres and hectares too.

How do I work out the cost of flooring or paint by square foot?

Type the price per unit area and choose ft², yd² or m². At 4.50 per ft² a 132 ft² floor costs 594.00. Add your own allowance for waste and cuts to the area or the price.

Are my measurements stored or sent anywhere?

No. The numbers are processed in your browser and are not uploaded. They are not stored on your device either, and reloading the page puts the example back. The page only counts that a result was shown, without any of your numbers.
