Time duration calculator

Work out the hours between two times, with a break and a rate, or add time to a time. Runs on your device.

How it works

  1. Type the start and end times, plus any unpaid break
  2. Read the duration as h:mm, decimal hours and minutes
  3. Switch to Add or subtract time to move a time forward or back

Hours between two times

Type a start time and an end time in 24-hour HH:MM form. The duration is the end minus the start. The page opens on 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30 minute break: that is 8:30 of elapsed time and 8:00 after the break, which is 8.00 decimal hours or 480 minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the end is taken to be on the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. The page treats the end as the next day in that case whether or not the End is on the next day box is ticked, and you can tick the box yourself for equal times: 08:00 to 08:00 is 0 hours, and ticked it is 24 hours. The duration is shown as hours and minutes, as decimal hours rounded to 2 decimals, and as total minutes.

Break and hourly rate

The unpaid break, in minutes from 0 to 1,440, is subtracted from the elapsed time. A break longer than the elapsed time shows a message under the box. The hourly rate is optional. With a rate, the page shows an amount equal to the rate times the paid minutes divided by 60, rounded to 2 decimals when shown. It is worked from the exact minutes, not from the rounded decimal hours, so 7 hours 20 minutes at 15 pays 110.00. Amounts have no currency symbol, and the number format follows your browser's language setting. Nothing you type is stored or sent.

Adding and subtracting time

The second mode starts from a time of day and adds or subtracts hours and minutes. 22:15 plus 3 hours and 45 minutes is 02:00 on the next day. The result wraps around midnight and the day offset tells you how many days later or earlier it falls, such as Next day (+1 day) or Previous day (-1 day). Hours and minutes can be larger than 24 hours and 60 minutes, so 90 minutes and 2 days of hours both work. Times use the 24-hour clock and are clock times only: daylight saving changes and time zones are not considered.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked with a break?

Type the start and end times and the unpaid break in minutes. 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30 minute break is 8 hours, or 8.00 in decimal hours. Add an hourly rate to see the amount for that time.

What if the shift ends after midnight?

Type the end time as it appears on the clock. When the end is earlier than the start, the page counts it as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. The page treats the end as the next day whether or not the End is on the next day box is ticked.

How are decimal hours worked out?

The total minutes are divided by 60 and rounded to 2 decimals. 8 hours 20 minutes is 500 minutes, or 8.33 hours. Use the h:mm figure when you need the exact time and the decimal one for timesheets or pay.

What is 08:00 to 08:00?

Zero hours, because the two times are equal and the end is not earlier than the start. Tick End is on the next day to count it as 24 hours.

Does it handle daylight saving or time zones?

No. The times are clock times with no date, so a day is always 24 hours. For a time in another zone use the time zone converter.

Can I add 90 minutes to a time?

Yes. Switch to Add or subtract time, type the time, choose Add and enter 0 hours and 90 minutes, or 1 hour and 30 minutes. 14:00 plus 90 minutes is 15:30, same day.
