What title case is and how the styles differ

Title case capitalises the main words of a title and keeps short function words, such as the, and, of and in, in lowercase. The styles agree on that idea and differ on where the line falls. AP and APA lowercase words of three letters or fewer, so a four-letter preposition is capitalised: Gone With the Wind in AP, and Starting From Scratch. Chicago 17th edition and MLA 9th edition lowercase every preposition whatever its length, so the same titles read Gone with the Wind and Starting from Scratch. All four capitalise the first and last word of a title and the first word after a colon. MLA also capitalises each part of a hyphenated compound, so Built-in becomes Built-In. This tool also offers sentence case, where only the first word of each sentence is capitalised, and a plain mode that capitalises every word.

The rules this tool applies

The short words come from each guide's public summary. AP and APA lowercase a, an, the, and, as, but, for, if, nor, or, so, yet, at, by, in, of, off, on, per, to, up and via unless they come first, last or after a colon. Chicago and MLA lowercase articles, coordinating conjunctions, as, and a list of prepositions that includes with, from, into, over, through and between. A word written in capitals, such as NASA, and a word with a capital inside it, such as iPhone or eBay, are left exactly as typed, so brand names and acronyms survive. If a whole line is in capitals, it is treated as shouting and converted. Each line of your text is converted on its own and spacing and line breaks stay as typed. Words after a dash and after the characters colon, full stop, question mark and exclamation mark start a new segment and are capitalised.

What it cannot know

A converter reads spelling, not meaning, so a few cases need your eye. Proper nouns are not detected: in sentence case, Paris becomes paris unless you type it as PARIS or leave it in your own mixed case. A preposition used as an adverb should be capitalised, as in Look Up or Log In, and the tool cannot tell the two uses apart, so it lowercases up in the middle of a phrase. The word to is lowercase in every style here, including as an infinitive marker. Chicago has an extra rule for hyphenated words that start with a prefix such as anti or non, which is not applied. AP and APA also vary the rule for the first word after a colon: this tool always capitalises it. When a publisher gives you a house style, follow it over this output.

Your text stays in this tab

The conversion runs in your browser. The text you paste is not uploaded, stored or put in the page address, and it is gone when you close the tab. Only your style choice is remembered on this device. Titles up to 100,000 characters convert at once. For other case changes, such as UPPERCASE, camelCase or snake_case, use the case converter, which applies one simple rule to every word.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AP and Chicago title case?

AP lowercases words of three letters or fewer and capitalises longer ones, so with becomes With: Gone With the Wind. Chicago lowercases every preposition of any length, so it gives Gone with the Wind. Both capitalise the first and last word.

Which words stay lowercase in APA title case?

In APA 7 the minor words of three letters or fewer stay lowercase: a, an, the, and, as, but, for, if, nor, or, so, yet, at, by, in, of, off, on, per, to, up, via. Words of four letters or more are capitalised, and so are verbs such as is, so it reads Why It Is Hard to Learn.

Does it keep acronyms like NASA and brands like iPhone?

Yes. A word of two or more letters that is all capitals stays as typed, and so does a word with a capital inside it, such as iPhone, eBay or McDonald. Turn off the keep option to convert them. A line typed entirely in capitals is converted, so THE ART OF WAR gives The Art of War.

Is the first word after a colon capitalised?

Yes, in every title style here: Star Wars: A New Hope. In sentence case the first word after a colon is also capitalised. APA and Chicago both capitalise the first word of a subtitle, while AP only does so for a complete sentence.

How are hyphenated words handled?

The first part follows the normal rule and later parts are capitalised unless they are minor words, so well-known becomes Well-Known and built-in becomes Built-in in Chicago. MLA capitalises every part: Built-In. Numbers such as 1990-2000 are left alone.

Can I convert many titles at once?

Yes. Paste one title per line and each line is converted on its own, so a list of 200 headlines is done in one step. Blank lines and spacing stay where they are, and the Words changed count shows how many words were edited.
