Make a vCard (.vcf) contact file

Type a contact's name, phones, email, address and birthday, choose vCard 4.0 or 3.0, and download a .vcf file or a QR code.

How it works

  1. Type the contact's details, or open a .vcf file to edit it
  2. Choose vCard 4.0 or 3.0
  3. Download the .vcf file or the QR code

What the tool writes

A vCard generator turns contact fields into a .vcf file, a plain-text card that phones and address books import as a new contact. This tool writes one card with a name, an optional nickname, an organisation and job title, up to three phone numbers (mobile, work, home), up to two email addresses (work, home), a website, one postal address, a birthday and a note. The name is stored twice, as the structured N line, with family name, given name, middle name, prefix and suffix in that order, and as the display name FN. Example: Mr. John Quinlan Public Esq. is written N:Public;John;Quinlan;Mr.;Esq. and FN:Mr. John Quinlan Public Esq., the same N value that RFC 6350 shows. If you give only an organisation, FN is the organisation and N is empty.

vCard 4.0 or 3.0

Version 4.0 is defined in RFC 6350 and version 3.0 in RFC 2426. Both are written with CRLF line ends. The tool changes what differs between them. In 4.0 a phone number becomes a tel: link such as TEL;TYPE=cell;VALUE=uri:tel:+442079460958, with spaces, dashes and brackets removed, and the birthday is written as 18151210 style digits. In 3.0 the phone is kept as you typed it, with TYPE=CELL,VOICE, an email gets TYPE=INTERNET,WORK, and the birthday is written as 1815-12-10. Pick 3.0 if an older app does not read a 4.0 card. Which apps read which version is not something this tool can check, so test the file on the device that matters.

Escaping and line folding

In a vCard value, a backslash, a comma, a semicolon and a line break must be escaped, because the semicolon separates the parts of N and of the address and a comma separates list items. A last name of Smith, Jr. is written Smith\, Jr., and a note with two lines is written with \n between them. The address is written as seven parts: post office box, extended address, street, city, region, postal code and country. RFC 6350 advises leaving the first two empty, and this tool does. A line longer than 75 octets is folded: the line breaks with CRLF and the next line starts with one space, and a multi-byte letter such as an accented e or a Chinese character is never split. The QR code uses the same card without folding, which keeps it shorter.

The QR code, opening a file, and limits

The QR code holds the whole vCard text, so a phone that scans it offers to save the contact. A long note or address can make the card too big for one code at the lower error-correction levels this tool tries, and then the page says so and still gives you the file. Opening a .vcf reads the first contact in it and fills the fields; the page tells you how many contacts the file had and how many items were not copied, such as photos, a fourth phone number, a second address or properties it does not know. Quoted-printable text from very old vCard 2.1 files is not decoded. The tool does not add a photo, a logo, social links or several addresses. Email addresses must be plain ASCII, as in name@example.com.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a vCard (.vcf) file?

Type the name and any phones, emails, address or birthday you want, then press Download .vcf. The file is named contact.vcf and has about 10 to 15 lines for a typical contact. Open it on a phone or in a contacts app to import it.

What is the difference between vCard 3.0 and 4.0?

Version 4.0 (RFC 6350) writes phones as tel: links and the birthday as 18151210. Version 3.0 (RFC 2426) writes the phone as typed with TYPE=CELL,VOICE and the birthday as 1815-12-10. Both hold the same contact here; choose 3.0 if an app rejects a 4.0 file.

How do I make a QR code that saves a contact?

Fill in the contact and use Download QR (PNG) or Download QR (SVG) under the card text. The code holds the vCard itself, so scanning it offers to save the contact. If the contact is too long for one code, shorten the note or address.

Can I edit an existing .vcf file?

Yes, one contact at a time. Press Open a .vcf file, change the fields and download the new card. If the file has 3 contacts, the first is loaded and the page says so. Photos, extra numbers and unknown properties are not copied, and the page counts them.

Why is there a backslash before a comma in my file?

A comma in a vCard value must be escaped, so Smith, Jr. becomes Smith\, Jr. in the file. Semicolons and backslashes are escaped the same way, and a new line in a note becomes \n. Contact apps remove the backslashes when they import.

Is my contact uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is processed in your browser and not uploaded. The card and the QR code are built on your device. Only the vCard version you chose is saved in this browser, never the name, numbers, address or note.
