Paste text and get a table of words, counts and shares. Nothing leaves your browser.
A word is a run of letters or digits. An apostrophe inside a word stays part of it, so don't is one word. The curly apostrophe is treated the same as the straight one, so don't and don’t are counted together. Hyphens, slashes, dots and other punctuation end a word, so well-known gives well and known, and 3.14 gives 3 and 14. Accented Latin letters work whether they are typed as one character or as a letter plus a mark. Other alphabets that separate words with spaces, such as Cyrillic and Greek, work too. Chinese and Japanese text has no spaces, so a whole phrase counts as one word. Scripts that use combining vowel signs, such as Hindi and Thai, are split at those signs, so their counts are not reliable. Decimal numbers are the one difference from the word counter, which keeps 3.14 as one word, so totals can differ slightly for text full of decimals.
Ignore case is on by default. The, THE and the are added up as one word and shown in lower case. Turn it off and each spelling gets its own row, shown as typed. Ignore numbers skips words made only of digits, such as 2026 or 14. A word like abc123 or 3rd is not made only of digits, so it stays. Minimum word length skips shorter words completely. They are not counted, not listed and not part of the totals. Set it to 4 to drop the, and, of and a. Length is counted in characters as you see them, from 1 to 50. These three settings decide what is counted, so the Total words and Unique words figures always match the table.
Sort by Count puts the most common word first. Words with the same count are put in A to Z order, so the table does not shuffle when you change a setting. Sort by A to Z orders words alphabetically, ignoring case when comparing. Share is the word's count divided by Total words, shown to one decimal, so a word used 3 times in 24 is 12.5%. The shares add up to about 100%, with small rounding differences. Below the table is a plain list in the form word, a tab, then the count, one word per line. Paste it into a spreadsheet and the two parts land in separate columns.
The table on the page shows the first 500 words, in your chosen order, and says so when there are more. The copy list always holds every word. Up to 1,000,000 characters are handled, and a longer text asks you to split it. Large pastes follow your typing after a short pause. The counting is done in this tab. No server receives your text, and the text is not saved. Only your choices are remembered in this browser. Stop words such as the and of are not removed unless you raise the minimum length, and words are not reduced to their stems, so run and running are two rows.
By default, yes. Ignore case is on, so The, THE and the count as one word and appear as the. Turn Ignore case off to see each spelling on its own row.
Set Minimum word length to 3 or 4. Words shorter than that are not counted at all, so the totals shrink too. With 3, words such as a, an, of and to disappear while the stays.
Yes. Copy the word and count list. Each line is the word, a tab and the count, so Excel or Google Sheets puts the words in column A and the counts in column B.
Drawing tens of thousands of rows would slow the page. The table shows the first 500 in your sort order, and the copy list below holds all of them, so a 50,000 word text still gives its complete result.
No. The words are counted in your browser, in this tab, and no server receives your text. The text is not saved, so closing the tab clears it.
