League table calculator

Paste match results and get the standings for any sport. Nothing leaves your browser.

How it works

  1. Paste one match result per line
  2. Choose the points for a win, draw and loss
  3. Copy the standings table

Result formats it reads

Write one match per line with the home team first. Four layouts work: Lions 2-1 Tigers, Lions 2 Tigers 1, Lions v Tigers 2-1 (v or vs between the names), and Lions,2,Tigers,1 with exactly four comma-separated fields. The score separator can be a hyphen, a colon or an en dash. Team names can contain spaces and digits, so Team 7 2-1 Team 8 is read as Team 7 against Team 8. In the layout without a separator, the last word is the away score and the home score is the closest number before it that has a team name after it. Team 7 2 Team 8 1 is read correctly, but a name that starts with a number, such as 7 Rovers, needs one of the other layouts. Scores are whole numbers from 0 to 999. Negative, decimal and longer scores are rejected.

How the table is ordered

Teams are ranked by these rules, in this order. First, points. Second, difference, which is For minus Against. Third, For, the score made. If teams are still level, the tool looks only at the matches played between those level teams and ranks them by the points from those matches, then by the difference in those matches. This is done once and is not repeated for smaller groups. Anything still level is ordered by name from A to Z, ignoring capital letters, so every team gets its own position. Real competitions differ: some use away scores, wins, fair play or a play-off before the head-to-head. Check your own rules and reorder the rows by hand when they differ.

Points, draws and team names

The presets are 3-1-0 (win, draw, loss, as in football), 2-1-0, and 1-0-0 where only wins score. Choose Custom to type your own values from 0 to 100, for example 5 for a win and 1 for a loss. A draw is equal scores. The same points rules apply to the head-to-head. By default Lions and lions are one team, shown with the spelling that appears first; turn the option off to keep them apart. Extra spaces inside a name are reduced to one. A line where both sides are the same team is skipped. Up to 200 teams and 200,000 characters are handled.

Skipped lines and privacy

A line that cannot be read is skipped, and a notice lists its line number, counted from the first line of your text including blank lines. The notice never repeats what the line said. The standings come as a table and as tab-separated text that pastes straight into a spreadsheet, with a header row. If no line can be read, you get a message instead of an empty table. Everything is calculated in this tab. No server receives the results, and they are not saved or put in the page address. Only your points choice and the capital-letters option are remembered in this browser.

Frequently asked questions

Which score layout should I use for team names with numbers?

Lions 2-1 Tigers style or the comma layout are the safest. A name like Team 7 works in every layout. Only a name that starts with a digit, such as 7 Rovers, can be misread in the layout without a separator, for example Team 7 2 7 Rovers 1.

How are teams ranked when points are equal?

By difference (For minus Against), then by For, then by the points and difference from the matches between the level teams only, then by name A to Z. For two teams level on 12 points, +5 and 20 scored, the match between them decides next.

Can I use it for basketball, hockey or rugby?

Yes. It only needs a score for each team, so any sport with a home and away score works. Use the 2-1-0 preset or Custom for rugby-style or hockey-style points. Bonus points and shootout results are not handled; add them to the points by hand.

Why were some of my lines skipped?

A skipped line has no readable score, has a score above 999 or below 0, or has the same team on both sides. The notice gives the line numbers, for example Lines 3, 5, so you can fix them. Blank lines are ignored but still count in the numbering.

Are my results uploaded?

No. The results are calculated in this tab and no server receives them. Your points choice is saved in this browser, but the text is not, so closing the tab clears it. Google Analytics counts visits and copy presses, never team names or scores.
