Make a printable multiplication chart

Print a times table chart from 1 to 12 or 1 to 20 with coloured rows, a practice chart with blanks, or a quiz with an answer key.

How it works

  1. Pick a full chart, a practice chart with blanks, or a quiz
  2. Choose how far it goes (2 to 20) and any colour or blank settings
  3. Download the PDF; practice sheets and quizzes include an answer key page

What each sheet contains

A multiplication chart is a grid with the numbers 1 to N across the top and down the side, where each cell holds the product of its row and column, and this tool prints one for any N from 2 to 20. A 12 by 12 chart has 144 facts, so the cell in row 7 and column 8 shows 56, and the bottom right cell shows 144. A 20 by 20 chart has 400 facts and ends at 400. The full chart is one page. The practice chart blanks out 25, 50, 75 or 100 percent of the cells, picked at random, so a 50 percent chart on 12 by 12 has 72 empty cells. The quiz lists 1 to 100 questions such as 7 × 8 = with a line for the answer.

Seeds and answer keys

Practice charts and quizzes are made from a seed number, a whole number from 1 to 999999999. The same seed with the same settings always gives the same blank cells or the same questions, so the answer key page always matches the worksheet, and you can reprint a sheet later by typing its seed. The New sheet button picks a new seed. In a quiz every fact from 1 × 1 up to N × N is used once before any fact repeats, so 100 questions at 12 by 12 contain 100 different facts. If you ask for more questions than there are facts, for example 10 questions from a 2 by 2 chart, which has 4 facts, the facts repeat after each full pass. The key lists each question with its answer, and on screen you can switch between the worksheet and the key.

Colour, size and the PDF

Colour each row gives every row its own light colour, with the colours spread evenly around the colour wheel, which helps a child follow a row across the page. Turn it off for a black and white print. The PDF is Letter or A4 portrait. The chart fills the width of the page, so a 12 by 12 chart has cells about 40 points wide, which is a little over half an inch, and a 20 by 20 chart has smaller ones. A name and date line can be added at the top of practice sheets and quizzes. The title can be changed, but it must use Western European letters (the Windows-1252 set, with accents such as é and ñ) and common punctuation, because the PDF uses a standard font; other scripts switch the download off and say why.

What the tool does not do

It only multiplies whole numbers from 1 up to 20. It does not include 0 times tables, division facts, timed tests or scoring, and it does not check a child's answers on screen. Because the blanks are random, a practice chart does not target a single times table; for that, set Up to to the table you need and use the quiz. Everything is made in this tab from the settings you choose and nothing is uploaded. Print at Actual size or 100 percent, since Fit to page shrinks the grid.

Frequently asked questions

How do I print a multiplication chart from 1 to 12?

Leave Sheet on Full chart and Up to on 12, then press Download PDF. You get one page with 144 facts and coloured rows. Choose Letter or A4 under PDF page size.

How do I make a blank multiplication chart to fill in?

Choose Practice chart and set Blank cells to 100% for an empty grid. For a 12 by 12 chart that is 144 empty cells. Use 50% to leave 72 of them blank. The PDF adds a second page with every answer filled in.

How do I make a multiplication quiz with an answer key?

Choose Quiz, set Up to to the biggest factor, for example 10, and Questions to 30. The PDF has the questions with answer lines, then a key page. 100 questions from a 12 by 12 chart never repeat a fact.

Can I get the same worksheet again?

Yes. The Seed box holds the number the sheet was made from. Type the same seed with the same settings and you get the same blank cells or the same questions, so you can reprint a sheet or its key.

How big is a 1-20 multiplication chart on one page?

It has 400 cells and still fits on one Letter or A4 page. The cells are smaller than on a 12 by 12 chart, about 25 points wide, so the numbers are printed at a smaller size.

Is my sheet uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is processed in your browser and not uploaded. The PDF is made on your device. The options you choose, such as the range, seed and page size, are saved in this browser so they are still set next time.
