Turn the text of a PDF into an editable Word file with headings and lists. Runs on your device.
To convert a PDF to Word, add the file, optionally type the pages you want, press Convert and download the .docx, which is named after your PDF. The tool reads the text that is stored in the PDF, joins the lines into paragraphs, and writes a Word document with headings, paragraphs, lists and bold or italic text. It shares its reading logic with PDF to Markdown. A heading is a line set clearly larger than the body text: the size ratio must be at least 1.12 for Heading 3, 1.3 for Heading 2 and 1.6 for Heading 1. With 12 pt body text, a 24 pt title is Heading 1, an 18 pt line is Heading 2 and a 14 pt line is Heading 3. Lists are found from their bullets and numbers, and bold or italic comes from font names such as Arial-BoldMT.
Text and its structure carry over. Layout does not. Images and drawings are left out, tables are not rebuilt (a table row stays one line of text with wide gaps and the result counts those lines), columns are read as plain lines, and fonts, colours, page headers and footers are replaced by a plain style. Headers and footers that repeat on most pages can be dropped, which is on by default. The Word page takes the size of the first PDF page. Use the file as a starting point for editing the words, then check it by eye. A page-perfect copy needs a program that rebuilds layout, which this is not.
A scanned PDF holds a picture of each page and no text, so there is nothing to put into Word. The tool says so and names the pages. Convert the pages to images with PDF to JPG, then read them with Image to Text, which uses character recognition. A PDF made from a word processor, a web page or a spreadsheet has real text and works. A password-protected PDF is refused with a link to Unlock PDF.
The file is a standard Word document built from scratch: the document text, a style sheet with Normal, Heading 1 to 3 and List Paragraph, and the page size. Text is escaped and characters that XML cannot hold are removed, so the file opens without a repair prompt. Lists use the original bullet or number as text with a hanging indent, not Word list numbering, so numbers do not renumber when you edit. Break between pages is an option: turn it on to start each PDF page on a new Word page.
The PDF is opened and read by code running in this tab. There is no upload step and no server that receives your file or your text. The page counts visits with Google Analytics, using rough size groups such as 1 to 10 MB, never a file name, a password or any text from the document. The text is kept in memory while the page is open and is not stored or put in the address bar. A PDF over 200 MB or over 1000 pages asks you to confirm before it loads, because a very large file can run out of memory on a phone.
Add the PDF, type the pages you want or leave it blank for all, and press Convert to Word. Download the .docx, named like report.docx. A 3-page article gives a document with its headings, paragraphs and lists as editable text.
No. Text, headings, lists and bold or italic carry over, but images, tables, columns, colours and exact fonts do not. A table row stays as one line of text with wide gaps. Use it to edit the words, then fix the layout in Word.
The PDF is probably a scan, which holds pictures of pages and no text. The tool names the pages with no text. Convert them to images with PDF to JPG, then read them with Image to Text to get editable text.
Headings are found from font size. A title set at the body size, only bold, shows no size difference, so it stays a paragraph. A heading must be at least 1.12 times the body size, so 14 pt over 12 pt body is level 3 and 20 pt or more is level 1.
Not directly. A PDF that asks for a password to open is refused. Remove the password with Unlock PDF if you know it, then add the unlocked copy here.
No. The PDF is read and converted in your browser, and the text is not uploaded. The page counts visits with Google Analytics using rough size groups such as 1 to 10 MB, never a file name or any text from the document.
