How the Word to PDF conversion works

To convert a Word document to PDF, add the .docx file, pick the page size and margins, press Convert to PDF and download the result. The tool reads the document structure, then lays it out itself on fresh pages. Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic and underline, bulleted and numbered lists, grid tables and PNG or JPEG pictures are kept. A4 pages are 595.28 by 841.89 points. With normal margins of 1 inch, which is 72 points, the text area is 451.28 points wide. Narrow margins are 0.5 inch, wide are 1.5 inches, and body text is 10, 11 or 12 points. Tables get column widths from their content and are split across pages row by row, with long cells continuing on the next page.

A simplified layout, not a copy of Word

This tool does not reproduce how Word draws the page. It does not carry over page headers and footers, columns, text boxes, shapes, exact fonts, colours, line spacing or page breaks you set by hand. Text is set in Helvetica and its bold and italic versions, and links become plain text. Merged table cells spanning rows are drawn as single cells. The result is a clean, readable document with your content in order, not a page-for-page match. If the layout is what matters, export from Word itself with Save As PDF.

Characters the PDF fonts cannot print

The standard PDF fonts used here cover Latin letters, digits, common punctuation and Western European accents. Other characters, such as Chinese, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic or emoji, cannot be printed. Rather than fail, the tool replaces each one with a question mark and tells you how many were replaced, listing the Unicode code points such as U+4E2D. A few look-alikes get a plain stand-in: a non-breaking space becomes a space, a minus sign a hyphen, an arrow becomes -> . If your document is mostly in such a script, this tool is not the right one.

Which files work

Only .docx files work, which is the format Word has used since 2007. The old binary .doc format is not supported: open it in Word and save as .docx first. A Word file protected with a password is also not read. Pictures must be PNG or JPEG to be placed, and pictures inside tables are left out; the result lists how many pictures were skipped. The PDF is capped at 1500 pages, and a document whose contents unzip to more than 200 MB is refused.

Your file stays on your device

The document is read and the PDF is drawn by code running in a background worker in this tab. There is no upload step and no server that receives your file or its text. The page counts visits with Google Analytics, using rough size groups such as 1 to 10 MB, never a file name, a password or any text from the document. A file over 200 MB asks you to confirm before it loads, because a very large file can run out of memory on a phone. A job that takes longer than two minutes is stopped, and Cancel stops it at once.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Word document to PDF for free?

Add the .docx file, pick A4 or Letter and press Convert to PDF. Download the PDF, named like report.pdf. A one-page memo with a heading, two paragraphs and a short table comes out as one A4 page.

Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?

No. The layout is simplified: headings, text, lists, tables and PNG or JPEG pictures are kept, but page headers and footers, columns, text boxes, exact fonts and colours are not. For a page-for-page copy, use Save As PDF inside Word.

Can I convert an old .doc file?

No. Only .docx is supported. Open the .doc file in Word, choose Save As, pick Word Document (.docx), and add that file here.

Why do I see question marks in my PDF?

The PDF fonts used here cannot print characters outside Latin letters and Western European accents. Each such character is replaced by a question mark, and the result tells you how many, with their Unicode code points, for example U+4E2D for a Chinese character.

Why is a picture missing?

Only PNG and JPEG pictures outside tables are placed. GIF, EMF, WMF and other kinds, and any picture inside a table cell, are left out. The result says how many pictures were skipped.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The document is read and converted in your browser and not uploaded. The page counts visits with Google Analytics using rough size groups such as 1 to 10 MB, never a file name or any text from the document.
