Pick 1 to 50 common English words. Choose nouns, verbs or adjectives, and short, medium or long. Runs in your browser.
The tool draws from a curated list of 1,200 common English words that was written for this site. It is not a dictionary: it leaves out rare, technical, offensive and sensitive words, proper nouns, abbreviations and anything with a capital letter, an accent or a hyphen. The list holds 600 nouns, 300 verbs and 300 adjectives, and each word is in exactly one of those groups, so a word such as walk is filed once, as a verb. Every word is lower case letters a to z. Because the list is small and plain, it suits games, warm-ups and writing prompts, but it will not contain every word you can think of.
Word type is Any, Nouns, Verbs or Adjectives. Any uses all 1,200 words. Length is Any, Short, Medium or Long. Short is 5 letters or fewer, Medium is 6 to 8 letters and Long is 9 letters or more. Both choices work together, so Long verbs picks only verbs of 9 letters or more. Every combination has words in it. Each word in the pool you choose is equally likely, so the share of nouns in an Any pick follows the list, 1 in 2, not a fixed rule.
Ask for 1 to 50 words. No repeats is on by default: the tool shuffles the matching words and deals from the top, so no word appears twice. With it off, each word is drawn on its own and a repeat can happen, as with dice. If No repeats is on and you ask for more words than match, you get every matching word and a short note. The big word at the top is the first of the list; with more than one word, the full list sits in a text box below, one word per line, ready to copy. The page also keeps the last 10 first words of this visit in a list.
The draw uses your browser's secure random source when available, and falls back to the browser's ordinary random function when it is not. The words are never sent anywhere, and your options are remembered in this browser while the words are not. Typical uses are charades, Pictionary, a story starter, a password-style phrase for fun, or a naming exercise. Do not use a short word list for a password: 1,200 words give only about 10 bits per word. For a number instead of a word, the Random Number Generator on this site does that.
There are 1,200 words: 600 nouns, 300 verbs and 300 adjectives. It is a curated list of common English words written for this tool, not a dictionary, so many valid words are not in it.
The list was written to be family-safe, with no offensive or sensitive words. It is still a plain word list and not a filter for what the words might remind someone of, so give a quick look before you use a result with a class.
No repeats is on and fewer words match your type and length. For example, there are only 43 long adjectives. You get every matching word, and a note says how many. Turn No repeats off to get up to 50 words.
Short is 1 to 5 letters, Medium is 6 to 8 letters and Long is 9 letters or more. The tool counts letters only, since the list has no spaces, hyphens or apostrophes.
No. The words are made in this tab and stay in this tab. Only your options, such as the count and the word type, are saved in this browser. The page counts visits with Google Analytics, and that count never includes anything you picked.
