Screen recorder: record your screen online

Record a tab, a window or your whole screen in the browser, with optional sound and microphone. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Choose the options and press Start
  2. Pick a tab, window or screen in the browser window
  3. Press Stop, check the preview and download

How to record your screen in the browser

To record your screen online, press Start, choose a tab, window or screen in the browser's picker, and press Stop when you are done. Before that you can set three options. The browser opens its own picker, where you choose a browser tab, a single window or the whole screen. After you choose, a 3-second countdown runs (you can turn it off or press Cancel), then recording begins and a timer counts the length. Press Stop on this page, or Stop sharing in the sharing bar the browser shows, and the recording ends and opens in a player. Download saves it as a file named like screen-recording-2026-10-15-1432.webm. The picker belongs to the browser, so this page cannot pick a screen for you and cannot see anything you did not choose to share.

Sound: shared audio and microphone

Share tab or screen sound asks the browser to include the sound of what you share. Whether that is offered depends on your browser, your operating system and whether you share a tab, a window or the screen, so the page checks what the browser actually gave and tells you if no sound came with it. Add my microphone asks for the microphone as well. When both are available, the page mixes them into one audio track with the Web Audio API, so the file holds a single track with both voices and the shared sound. With only the microphone, the file holds the microphone. With neither, the file has no sound, and the Sound tile says so.

Format, size and where it works

The video is made by your browser's own MediaRecorder, so the format is whatever the browser can produce: WebM or MP4, chosen from what the browser reports it supports. The page shows the real format before you start and in the result, and never calls a file something it is not. The file size grows with the length of the recording and with how much changes on the screen, and the whole recording is held in memory in this tab until you download it, so very long recordings can strain a small computer. Screen recording needs the getDisplayMedia feature, which desktop browsers offer. On phones, iOS Safari and most Android browsers do not, and the page then says screen recording is not available in this browser.

What is kept and what can go wrong

Nothing is uploaded, and the page stores nothing: the recording lives in this tab until you press Download or leave. If you close the tab first, it is lost. If you cancel the picker or the browser blocks sharing, no recording starts and a message says so. If you press Stop sharing during the countdown, the countdown is cancelled. If sharing ends while recording, the page keeps what was recorded until then.

Frequently asked questions

How do I record my screen without installing software?

Open this page on a desktop browser, press Start, choose a tab, window or screen in the browser's picker, wait for the 3-second countdown and record. Press Stop, play the preview and press Download. The file is WebM or MP4, depending on the browser.

Why is there no sound in my screen recording?

Shared sound is offered by the browser only in some cases: it depends on the browser, the operating system and whether you share a tab, a window or the screen. If none arrived, the Sound tile says No sound. Turn on Add my microphone to record your voice, which works in any desktop browser that allows the microphone.

Can I record my screen on an iPhone or Android phone?

Not from this page. Screen recording from a web page needs getDisplayMedia, and iOS Safari and most Android browsers do not offer it. The page then shows that screen recording is not available in this browser. Use the screen recorder built into your phone's system instead.

What can I choose to record: a tab, a window or the whole screen?

All three, if your browser offers them. The picker is shown by the browser, not by this page, and only what you choose there is recorded. Choosing a single tab records just that tab, and nothing outside it.

What happens if I click Stop sharing in the browser bar?

The recording ends at that moment, exactly as if you had pressed Stop here, and the part recorded so far opens in the player with a note saying that sharing stopped. If you click it during the countdown, the countdown is cancelled and nothing is recorded.

Is my screen uploaded or stored?

No. The recording is made in your browser and not uploaded, and the page stores nothing. It stays in this tab's memory until you press Download or close the tab. The page counts visits and presses of Start with Google Analytics, never video or sound.
