  2. Speak, pause and resume as needed, then press Stop
  3. Play it back and download the file

How to record audio online

To record audio online, press Start recording, allow the microphone in the browser prompt, speak and press Stop: the recording then plays back in the page and downloads as a file. The page asks for the microphone only at that moment, never when it loads. A timer counts the length and a level bar shows what the microphone hears. Pause holds the recording without ending it, and Resume carries on into the same file. Stop ends the recording, switches the microphone off and opens a player so you can listen before you keep it. Download saves the file. Record again throws the current recording away and starts fresh.

Which file you get

The recording is made by your browser's own MediaRecorder, so the file is in a format the browser can produce, not one this page chooses. The page asks for WebM first and MP4 audio (M4A) if WebM is not available, and shows the real format before you start and again next to the finished recording. It never calls a file MP3 or WAV, because the browser does not make those here. The file name carries the date and time you started, for example recording-2026-10-15-1432.webm. If a player or editor does not open the file, a converter can change its format afterwards.

Length, memory and leaving the page

A recording can run up to 60 minutes. In the last 5 minutes the page shows how many minutes are left, for example 5 minutes left at 55:00, and at 60:00 it stops by itself and keeps what it has. The time shows minutes and seconds, such as 01:05, and adds hours from one hour, such as 01:02:03. The recording is held in memory in this tab as the audio is captured, so a long recording uses more memory and the file grows with its length. Until you press Download, the only copy is in this tab. If you try to close the tab or reload the page while a recording exists and is not downloaded, the browser asks you to confirm first. The page also asks the device to keep the screen on while you record, where the browser allows it.

What can stop a recording

If the microphone is unplugged or taken by another app while you record, the page ends the recording and keeps what was captured so far, with a note saying so. If you block the microphone, no recording starts and the message tells you how to allow it in the address bar. If nothing is recorded, you get a message instead of an empty file. The recorder does not clean up noise, trim silence or edit; it saves what the microphone sends. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored on the site: no account, no history and no saved recordings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I record my voice on a computer without installing anything?

Open this page, press Start recording and allow the microphone when the browser asks. Speak, press Stop, play the clip and press Download. The file is saved as WebM or M4A, depending on what your browser can record, with a name like recording-2026-10-15-1432.webm.

What format is the recording, MP3 or WAV?

Neither. The browser records in its own format, usually WebM or MP4 audio (M4A), and the page shows which one next to the finished recording. It does not convert to MP3 or WAV. If you need MP3, convert the downloaded file in an audio converter.

How long can I record?

Up to 60 minutes. In the last 5 minutes the page shows how many minutes are left, and at 60:00 it stops and keeps the recording so you can download it. For something longer, record in parts and download each one.

Can I pause and carry on in the same file?

Yes. Pause holds the recording and the timer; Resume continues into the same file, so the paused time is not counted and not recorded. Stop ends it for good. After Stop you can only play, download or record again.

What happens if I close the tab before downloading?

The recording is lost, because it exists only in this tab's memory. While a recording that is not downloaded exists, the browser asks you to confirm before you leave or reload. After you press Download, the page stops asking.

Is my voice uploaded or stored?

No. The audio is processed in your browser and not uploaded, and the page stores nothing. The recording lives in this tab until you download it or leave. The page counts visits and presses of Start with Google Analytics, never audio.
