Typing speed test: WPM, accuracy and CPM

Type for 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds and get net and gross WPM, accuracy and characters per minute. Nothing leaves your browser.

How it works

  1. Choose the time and the kind of text
  2. Start typing the text shown; the clock starts at your first key
  3. Read your WPM, accuracy and errors, then restart

How the typing speed test works

A typing speed test measures how many words you type per minute by timing you on a set text, and this one gives gross WPM, net WPM, accuracy and characters per minute after 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds. Choose the time and the text, then type in the box under the text. The clock starts at your first key, not before. Letters you type right are coloured, wrong ones are coloured and struck through, and a line under the next character shows where you are. Backspace fixes a mistake. The test ends when the time is up or when you reach the end of the text. Pasting and the Enter key are switched off in the box, so the score comes from typing.

How WPM, accuracy and CPM are worked out

Gross WPM is the number of characters typed divided by 5, divided by the minutes taken, because a word is counted as five characters including the space. Net WPM is gross WPM minus the errors per minute, never below 0, where an error is a wrong character still in the box at the end. Accuracy is right characters divided by typed characters, and CPM is typed characters divided by the minutes. For example, 250 characters typed in 60 seconds with 5 of them wrong give a gross of 50 WPM, a net of 45 WPM, 98 percent accuracy and 250 CPM. In 30 seconds, 100 right characters give 40 WPM. A mistake you correct with backspace costs you the time but is not counted as an error.

Passages and common words

Passage mode gives short original English passages in a random order with capitals, commas and full stops, enough of them to last a fast typist for the whole time. Common words mode gives everyday words in lower case with no punctuation. The two modes are not comparable: punctuation and capitals can slow you down, so keep to one mode when you compare runs. The text is a different random mix each time, and a short test is a small sample, so one run says little. Take several runs of the same length and look at the middle of them rather than the best.

Limits and keyboard use

The test uses plain English text and keys on a standard keyboard, so it does not test other languages or symbols. Phone keyboards may still autocorrect or predict words even though the box asks them not to, which changes the result. The numbers are for practice and for watching your own progress; they are not a certified score for a job application or a course. To start again from the keyboard, press Tab to move to Restart and then Enter. Your result is read out once when the test ends. The time and text you choose are remembered in this browser; what you type and your results are not.

Frequently asked questions

How is words per minute calculated in a typing test?

Gross WPM is typed characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes taken. Typing 300 characters in 60 seconds is 300 / 5 / 1 = 60 WPM, and the same 300 characters in 30 seconds is 300 / 5 / 0.5 = 120 WPM. Net WPM then subtracts errors per minute.

What is the difference between gross and net WPM?

Gross WPM counts every character typed, right or wrong. Net WPM takes away the wrong characters left in the box: with a gross of 50 WPM and 5 errors in one minute, net WPM is 50 - 5 = 45. Net is the figure to use for progress.

How is typing accuracy calculated here?

Accuracy is the right characters divided by the characters typed, at the end of the test. If 245 of 250 typed characters are right, accuracy is 98 percent. Mistakes you fixed with backspace are not counted, so this shows what is left, not every slip.

How long should a typing test be?

Pick 60 seconds for a usual one-minute test, 15 or 30 seconds for a quick check, and 120 seconds to see how your speed holds up. A 15 second test is a small sample, so one lucky or clumsy run moves the number a lot.

Can I restart the test with the keyboard?

Yes. Press Tab to leave the typing box, which lands on Restart, then press Enter. You get new text and the box is ready for your first key. You can do this in the middle of a test as well.

Is my typing uploaded or saved?

No. The text you type is processed in your browser and not uploaded. Only your choice of time and text is saved in this browser; what you type and your results are not. Google Analytics counts visits and finished tests, never your text or scores.
