Username generator for gamertags and handles

Make 1 to 50 usernames from family-friendly word lists, with your own word if you like. Nothing leaves your browser.

How it works

  1. Pick a style, separator and capitals
  2. Type a word of your own if you want it included
  3. Press the button and copy the names you like

How the usernames are made

A username generator joins words from a list and, if you ask, a number, so the default style, adjective plus noun with Camel capitals, gives names such as SwiftFox or QuietOtter. The adjective list holds 173 words and the noun list 169, which makes 29,237 different adjective and noun pairs before any number is added. Each word is chosen by your browser's secure random source when available, so every word in a list is equally likely. The lists were written for this tool and hold only animals, nature, colours and friendly qualities, with no names of people and no slang. The page does not check whether a name is free on any site or game. Type your pick into the service you want to use, and if it is taken, press Make more.

The four styles

Adjective plus noun gives pairs such as BoldComet. Noun plus number gives a noun and a number from 10 to 999, such as otter482, which is the shape many sign-up pages suggest when a plain name is taken. Two nouns gives pairs such as FoxMeadow, never the same noun twice. Same first letter picks an adjective and a noun that start with the same letter, such as BraveBadger or SilverSparrow, which are easy to remember. The Add a number box puts a number from 10 to 999 on the end of any style except noun plus number, where it is always there. Between words can be nothing, an underscore, a dot or a dash, and the same character goes in front of a number, so a name can read swift_fox_42.

Using your own word

Type a word into the box and every name includes it, in a random position: with adjective plus noun it is either the adjective's place or the noun's place. The word is reduced to the letters a to z and the digits 0 to 9, because most sign-up forms allow nothing else, and it is cut to 20 characters. Accents and spaces are dropped, so a word like Zoƫ becomes zo. If nothing is left after that, the page says the word was left out. In Same first letter style, a word is paired with a word of its first letter, so fox gives names such as FoxFalcon or FearlessFox; a few first letters, such as x, have no word list and the page says so instead of using another letter. A word longer than the longest-name setting is refused, so every name keeps your whole word. A keyword is not checked for taste: you choose it, so you are responsible for it.

Capitals, length and what is not checked

lower gives swiftfox, Camel starts every word with a capital, as in SwiftFox, and UPPER gives SWIFTFOX. The longest-name setting runs from 6 to 30 characters, with 16 as the default. If a name comes out too long the generator tries other words first, and only then cuts the name to length and tells you so. Every name in a batch is different, ignoring capitals. If the settings allow fewer different names than you asked for, for example one noun and a 6 character limit, the page shows the names it could make and says so. A username is not private: pick one that does not give away your real name, school or town, and check each site's own rules for allowed characters and length.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a gamertag with my own word in it?

Type the word, for example fox, in the box above the options and press Make usernames. Every name then contains fox, such as FoxMeadow or BoldFox. Only the letters a to z and digits 0 to 9 are kept, up to 20 characters.

How do I get usernames with numbers?

Turn on Add a number at the end, or choose the Noun + number style. Numbers run from 10 to 999, so you get names such as otter482 or Bold_Comet_73 when an underscore is chosen between words.

Can I make a username with an underscore or a dot?

Yes. Under Between words pick _, . or -. Then SwiftFox becomes Swift_Fox, Swift.Fox or Swift-Fox, and a number joins the same way, as in swift_fox_42. Some sites do not allow dots or dashes, so check the form first.

Why is a name shorter or different from what I set?

The longest name setting is a ceiling from 6 to 30 characters. The generator draws other words when a name is too long, and only cuts a name as a last step, then shows a note. Your own word counts toward the length: a 12 character word with a limit of 16 leaves 4 characters for the rest.

Will the username be free on a site or in a game?

The tool cannot tell. It has no link to any service, so it only builds names from its lists. With 29,237 adjective and noun pairs, a name can still be taken, so make a batch of 50 and try the next one.

Are my words or the usernames uploaded or saved?

No. The names are made in your browser, in this tab, and no server receives them or your keyword. Your choices, such as the style and the separator, are saved in this browser; the word you type and the names are not. Google Analytics counts visits and copy presses, never the names.
