Make a word cloud from text

Paste text or a list of words with weights, pick a rectangle, circle or heart, and save the word cloud as a PNG or SVG.

How it works

  1. Paste your text, or switch to a word list and type word: weight lines
  2. Pick a shape, a font, colours and a background
  3. Download the cloud as a PNG or an SVG

How the words are counted and sized

A word cloud generator counts the words in your text and draws each one at a size that grows with how often it appears, so the main themes stand out. A word here is a run of letters or digits, and an apostrophe inside it stays, so don't is one word. Words that differ only in capital letters are merged, and the spelling that appears most often is shown. By default the tool removes the 174 words of the Snowball English stop word list, such as the, and, of and don't, drops words shorter than 3 letters and ignores plain numbers. Each can be changed. Sizes follow size = smallest + (largest - smallest) x the square root of ((weight - lightest) / (heaviest - lightest)). On the rectangle the largest word is 90 px and the smallest 13 px. In the sample text, words appears 10 times and is drawn at 90 px, while word appears 4 times and is drawn at 57 px. Word and words are counted separately, because the tool does not reduce words to their stems.

Placing words without overlap

The heaviest word goes first. Each word starts at the middle of the shape and moves outward along a spiral until its box fits where no earlier word is. Boxes are checked on a grid of 4 by 4 unit cells, so no two words overlap and none leaves the shape. If the spiral finds nothing, the free spot nearest the middle is used. If a word has no spot at all, it is made smaller, to 80 percent and then 64 percent, and after that it is left out and counted in a notice. When there are more words than the shape can hold, all the sizes are scaled down first, so a 200-word heart gets small letters rather than missing words. The rectangle is 800 by 600 units, the circle 700 by 700 and the heart 760 by 700; the PNG is saved at twice that size, so 1600 by 1200 pixels for the rectangle. Some upright makes about one word in four read bottom to top. The layout seed decides the starting angles and the colour order, so the same text and seed always give the same cloud.

Word lists with weights, fonts and colours

Choose Word list when you already have counts, for example from a survey. Write one word per line with its weight after a colon, a comma, a semicolon, a tab, an equals sign or a space: cloud: 30. Weights can have decimals. Repeated words are added together, and a line with no valid positive weight is skipped and counted. A list is used as typed: no common words are removed. Fonts are Sans-serif and Serif, which use the fonts on your device, and Caveat, Indie Flower and Homemade Apple, which come with the site and cover Latin letters only. Other characters are drawn in a fallback font. An SVG file keeps the words as text with the font name, so a device without that font shows a fallback, while the PNG has the font drawn in. Colours come from five palettes, with lighter versions on the dark background. The background can be white, dark or transparent.

What this tool does not do

It does not understand meaning. It does not group word forms, join two-word phrases in text mode, tell names from other words, or remove common words in languages other than English. It makes no shape from a picture, only the three above. Word boxes are rectangles, so a tall letter can leave a little space around a word. The cloud shows how often words appear in the text you pasted, not whether they are important. Text up to 200,000 characters is read, and at most 200 words are drawn.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a word cloud from text?

Paste the text into the box and the cloud appears at once, with common English words removed. Choose a shape, font and colours, press New layout until you like the arrangement, then press Download PNG or Download SVG.

How do I make a word cloud with my own word sizes?

Switch My input is to Word list and write one word per line with a number, like cloud: 30 and words: 24. The numbers are the weights, and the biggest weight gets the biggest word. You can use decimals, such as 2.5.

Why are some of my words missing from the cloud?

Common words such as the, and and of are removed by default, as are words shorter than 3 letters and plain numbers. You can turn those off. The cloud also shows at most the number of words you choose, from 10 to 200, and a notice names how many did not fit.

How do I make a heart-shaped word cloud?

Pick Heart under Shape. Words are placed only inside the heart, which is 760 by 700 units, and the biggest word sits near its middle. Dark and transparent backgrounds work with the heart too, and the PNG is saved at 1520 by 1400 pixels.

Should I download a PNG or an SVG?

Use PNG to put the cloud in a document or slide: it is a picture with the font drawn in. Use SVG when you want to edit it or print it sharply at any size; it keeps each word as text, so a device without the chosen font shows a fallback font.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is processed in your browser and not uploaded. The cloud and the files are made on your device. Only the options, such as the shape, font, colours and seed, are saved in this browser, never your text.
