Bowling score calculator

Tap the pins knocked down, get the running score frame by frame, for up to six players.

How it works

  1. Tap the number of pins you knocked down on each ball, or X and /
  2. Watch the running total fill in frame by frame, with the best possible score
  3. Add players, or paste a score string such as X 7/ 9-, then copy the result

How ten-pin bowling is scored

A ten-pin game has 10 frames, and the most you can score is 300, which is 12 strikes in a row. In frames 1 to 9 you get up to two balls to knock down 10 pins. An open frame, where pins are left standing after two balls, scores only the pins you knocked down. A spare means you cleared all 10 pins in two balls, and it scores 10 plus the pins from your next ball. A strike means all 10 pins on the first ball, and it scores 10 plus the pins from your next two balls. That is why a frame total can stay blank for a moment: the calculator shows the number only when the bonus balls have been rolled, and a note under the card says what the frame is waiting for. These rules follow the USBC Playing Rules and World Bowling Playing Rules, which score a game the same way.

The 10th frame and bonus balls

The 10th frame is the only one with extra balls, and most scoring mistakes happen there. If you leave pins standing after two balls, the frame ends and you have only two balls. If you throw a spare, you get one bonus ball on a fresh rack of 10 pins. If you throw a strike, you get two bonus balls: after a strike on the first ball the pins are reset, and if you strike again they are reset a second time. So a 10th frame can be X X X, X 5 /, 7 / 3, or 4 5, and it scores simply the pins knocked down in those balls, with no extra bonus after the frame. The calculator enforces this. After X 5 it allows only 0 to 5 on the next ball, since only 5 pins are standing, and it turns the / button on instead of X. After a spare it shows 10 pins standing again.

Entering scores, fouls and pasting a string

Use the number buttons for pins knocked down, X for a strike and / for a spare. The digit buttons are greyed out when more pins are chosen than are standing, so an impossible frame such as 6 then 5 cannot be entered. F records a foul, where the bowler steps over the line: the ball scores 0 and shows F on the card. Undo removes the last ball for the active player. With more than one player the turn passes on when a frame ends, and you can tap a name to change whose ball it is. Under Players, names and paste a score you can type or paste a whole card such as X 7/ 9- X X 8/ 72 X 90 X9/. The symbols are X, /, - for a miss, F for a foul and digits for pins. The string is checked ball by ball, and the first impossible symbol is reported with its position.

What the numbers on the card mean

Each frame box shows the marks for its balls on the top line and the running total after that frame underneath, which is how a paper score sheet works. The big number beside each name is the current total. Under each card the calculator gives the best possible score from here, assuming every remaining ball is as good as it can be. Before the first ball that is 300. After a 9 and a miss in frame 1 it is 279, and after a spare in frame 1 it is 290. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere, and the scores live only in this tab. This tool scores traditional ten-pin bowling; it does not apply handicap, which many leagues add on top, and it does not cover candlepin, duckpin or five-pin, which use different rules.

Frequently asked questions

What is a perfect game in bowling?

A perfect game is 300, made of 12 strikes in a row: one for each of the 10 frames plus two bonus strikes in the 10th. Each frame scores 30, so the running total goes 30, 60, 90 and up to 300.

How is a strike scored?

A strike scores 10 plus the pins from your next two balls. A strike followed by 7 and 2 scores 19 for that frame. Three strikes in a row score 30 for the first one, 10 + 10 + 10.

How is a spare scored?

A spare scores 10 plus the pins from your next single ball. A 7 and a spare followed by 4 scores 14 for that frame. A game of 21 balls with 5 on every ball is all spares and scores 150.

Why is my frame total not showing yet?

The frame is a strike or a spare and its bonus balls have not been rolled yet. A strike needs two more balls and a spare needs one. The total appears as soon as they are entered, and a note under the card says what is pending.

How many balls do I get in the 10th frame?

Two balls if you leave pins standing, and three balls if you throw a strike or a spare. For example X 5 / is three balls and scores 20, and 4 5 is two balls and scores 9.

What does a foul score?

A foul scores 0 for that ball, even if pins fell. Press F and the ball is entered as 0 and shown as F on the card. The pins still standing are the full rack for that ball, so the next ball is not limited by the foul.
