Final grade calculator: what do I need on my final

Find the score you need on the final exam to reach a target grade, with a table for 90, 80, 70 and 60 and a what-if score.

How it works

  1. Type your current grade and the weight of the final
  2. Type the grade you are aiming for
  3. Read the score you need and the table of other targets

How the score needed on a final is worked out

To find the score you need on your final, take your target grade, subtract the part of the course grade you already have, and divide by the weight of the final: needed = (target − current × (100 − weight) ÷ 100) ÷ (weight ÷ 100). With 88% now, a final worth 30% and a target of 90%, your current grade is worth 88 × 0.70 = 61.6 points. You need 90 − 61.6 = 28.4 more points from the final, and 28.4 ÷ 0.30 = 94.67%, so the page shows 94.67%. The result is rounded up to 2 decimals, because a lower score would fall just short. The page opens on this example. Weights must be above 0 and up to 100, and grades from 0 to 200 are accepted so extra credit can be typed. The box under the answer repeats the formula with your numbers.

The table of other targets

Below the answer is a table for the grade you typed and for 90, 80, 70 and 60, so you can see how the final changes with the goal. With 88% now and a final worth 30%, an overall 90 needs 94.67%, an 80 needs 61.34%, a 70 needs 28% and a 60 is already secured, because 0% on the final still leaves you at 61.6%. A target that needs more than 100% is marked Over 100%. That means one final scored out of 100 cannot reach it. A course with extra credit may allow more, which this page cannot know. The 90, 80, 70 and 60 rows are a common letter scale, but schools use other cut-offs, plus and minus grades and different rounding, so use your syllabus for the real boundaries.

Trying a score and the best and worst case

Two tiles show the overall grade you would finish with after 0% and after 100% on the final. With the example numbers that is 61.6% and 91.6%. The optional box lets you try a score: 85% on the final gives 88 × 0.70 + 85 × 0.30 = 87.1% overall. Leave it empty to hide that line. If you want to build the current grade from several assignments first, the grade calculator on this site averages scores by weight and gives you the number to type here.

What this does not know

The page uses the single current grade you type and treats the final as one score. It does not know whether your course drops a lowest score, curves the final, rounds up at 89.5, or counts the final as more than one part. It assumes your current grade already covers all of the rest of the course, so the weights add up to 100 with the final. If the final is the only grade, type a weight of 100 and the score needed is the target itself. The numbers come only from what you type, and the result is a calculation, not academic advice.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need on my final to get a 90 if I have 88 now?

It depends on the weight. If the final is worth 30%, you need 94.67%: (90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30. If it is worth 50%, you need (90 − 44) ÷ 0.50 = 92%. Type your own weight and the page shows the same steps.

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Multiply your current grade by (100 − the final's weight) ÷ 100, subtract that from your target, then divide by the final's weight ÷ 100. With 75% now, a final worth 40% and a target of 80, that is (80 − 45) ÷ 0.40 = 87.5%.

What does it mean when the page says Over 100%?

The target cannot be reached by one final scored out of 100. With 70% now, a final worth 20% and a target of 80, you would need 120%. Lower the target, or check your syllabus for extra credit, which this page cannot know about.

What if the final is worth 100% of my grade?

Then your current grade does not count and the score you need equals your target. For a target of 70 you need 70%. Type 100 as the weight and the page shows exactly that.

Can I fail the final and still get an A?

Only if the target is already secured. With 92% now, a final worth 25% and a target of 90, you need 84%, so a low score would pull you under. The Overall with 0% tile shows the grade if you scored nothing.

Is my grade stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the numbers stay in this tab. They are not uploaded or stored on your device. Reloading the page puts the example back. The page only counts that a result was shown, without any of your numbers.
