Grade calculator

Work out a weighted course grade, or the score you need on the final. Runs on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose My grade or Needed on final
  2. Type scores and weights, or your current grade, the final's weight and your target
  3. Read the result and the formula under it

How the weighted grade is worked out

Each assessment has a score and a weight, both as percentages. The grade is the sum of score × weight, divided by the sum of the weights. The page opens on homework 92 at weight 20, a midterm 78 at 30 and a project 88 at 20: 1840 + 2340 + 1760 = 5940, and 5940 ÷ 70 = 84.86%. Up to 8 assessments fit. A name is optional, and a row with neither a score nor a weight is skipped. A row with only one of the two shows a message under the missing box. Scores may go up to 200 so extra credit can be typed; weights go from 0 to 100. Numbers can be typed with commas, as in 1,250.50, and a single comma before one or two digits at the end, as in 82,5, is read as a decimal comma.

When the weights do not add up to 100

Weights do not have to total 100. If the course is only partly graded, the total will be lower, and the headline then reads Grade on the work so far: the average over the weights you entered, so 84.86% in the example above. A second tile, Points toward the course, shows score × weight ÷ 100 out of the weights total, here 59.4 of 70. If the weights total more than 100 the same rule applies and the page says the total is not 100. Weights that total 0 give a message instead of a result, because there is nothing to divide by.

The score needed on the final

Enter your current grade, the weight of the final exam and the grade you are aiming for. The needed score is (target − current × (100 − weight) ÷ 100) ÷ (weight ÷ 100). With 82 now, a final worth 40 and a target of 85, that is (85 − 49.2) ÷ 0.4 = 89.5%. The result is rounded up to 2 decimals, because a lower score would fall just short. If the answer is above 100 the page says the target cannot be reached with a final scored out of 100, though extra credit could change that. If even 0% on the final keeps you at or above the target, it says Already secured. Two tiles show the overall grade with 0% and with 100% on the final.

Letter grades and what this does not know

The optional letter uses one common scale: A at 90 and above, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60, and F below 60. It is taken from the percentage rounded to 2 decimals, the same digits that are shown, so 89.995 shows as 90% and as an A. Many schools use other cut-offs, plus and minus grades, rounding, dropped lowest scores or categories with their own rules, and none of that is known here. The numbers come only from what you type. This is a calculation, not academic advice, and your instructor's syllabus decides the grade that counts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights. With scores of 80, 90 and 100 at weights of 25, 50 and 25, the sum is 2000 + 4500 + 2500 = 9000, and 9000 ÷ 100 = 90%. Type each pair into a row and the page shows the same steps.

What if my weights add up to less than 100?

The result is labelled Grade on the work so far. It is the sum of score × weight divided by the sum of the weights you typed, so scores of 92, 78 and 88 at weights of 20, 30 and 20 give 84.86% on 70% of the course. The Points toward the course tile shows 59.4 of 70.

How do I find the score I need on my final?

Choose Needed on final and enter your current grade, the final's weight and your target. At 82 now, a final worth 40% and a target of 85, you need 89.5%. The tiles also show the overall grade you would end with after scoring 0% and 100% on the final.

What does it mean when the needed score is over 100%?

The target cannot be reached by one final scored out of 100. With 90 now, a final worth 20% and a target of 95, the page shows 115%. Lower the target, or check whether your course offers extra credit, which this page cannot know about.

Which letter grade scale does it use?

A at 90 and above, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60 and F below 60, with no plus or minus. Schools differ, so treat the letter as a rough guide and read your syllabus. The letter is taken from the percentage rounded to 2 decimals.

Is my grade stored or sent anywhere?

No. Scores, weights and names stay in this tab and are not stored on your device or sent anywhere. Reloading the page puts the example back. The page only counts that a result was shown, without any of your numbers.
