Where to put page numbers

Pick one of six spots: top or bottom, and left, center or right. Bottom center is the default. Bottom right keeps the number out of the middle, and the top corners suit pages that already carry a footer at the bottom. The number is drawn in Helvetica at the size you choose, from 8 to 24 points, 11 by default. The margin is the distance from the edge of the page, from 18 to 72 points, 28 by default. Black or grey is offered, and nothing else. The number is drawn on top of the page. If your page already has a footer, a stamp or a scan border at that edge, the number can overlap it, and the preview beside the controls shows where it will land before you press the button. Move it to another edge or raise the margin if it does.

Skipping the cover page

Tick Skip the first page and page 1 gets no number. The next page then starts the count, so a ten page PDF with a cover is numbered 1 to 9 on pages 2 to 10. Formats that print a total follow the same rule. With Page 1 of N, the N is the last number the tool hands out, not the page count of the file, so the second page reads Page 1 of 9 and the last reads Page 9 of 9. Start number lets you begin at another value, such as 3 when a cover and a contents page come before the first numbered page. The count always begins on the first page that is numbered.

Numbering part of a document

Apply to takes the same page ranges as the other PDF tools on this site: 3-5, 8, 10- and so on. Leave it blank to number every page. Pages outside the range are left exactly as they were, with the same size, rotation and content, and the numbers inside the range run in page order. For example, in a ten page PDF with Apply to set to 3-5, Start number 7 and the Page 1 format, pages 3, 4 and 5 read Page 7, Page 8 and Page 9. Combined with Skip the first page, a range that only holds page 1 leaves nothing to number, and the tool says so instead of producing an unchanged file. Rotated pages and pages with a cropped view are handled: the number sits at the position you see on the screen, not at a corner of the underlying page.

Why your file stays private

The PDF is read and edited by your browser, in this tab. There is no upload step and no server that receives the file. The page counts visits with Google Analytics, using rough groups such as 1 to 10 MB, never a file name, a page count or the text of a number. Your device's memory sets the limits. The tool warns before opening a PDF over 200 MB or with more than 1000 pages, and it works on one file at a time. Passwords are not removed: a protected PDF is refused with a message asking you to take the password off first. This tool adds only the page number. It does not edit existing numbers, add headers or footers, use Roman numerals or number odd and even pages differently.

Frequently asked questions

How do I leave the cover page without a number?

Tick Skip the first page. Page 1 is left as it is and the next page becomes number 1, so a 10-page PDF is numbered 1 to 9 on pages 2 to 10. If you want the second page to read 2, set Start number to 2 as well.

Can I start at a number other than 1?

Yes. Set Start number to any whole number from 1 to 9999. The first numbered page gets that number and each numbered page after it adds one, so a start of 7 on pages 3 to 5 gives 7, 8 and 9.

What does Page 1 of N mean?

N is the last number the tool prints. On a 10-page PDF with every page numbered, the last page reads Page 10 of 10. With the first page skipped, the last page reads Page 9 of 9, because only nine pages are numbered.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. A scan is a picture of each page, and the number is drawn on top of that picture as real text. The number sits in the margin you pick, but if the scan has content or a dark border at that edge, the number can overlap it. Check the preview first.

What happens on rotated pages?

The number is placed where you see it. A page stored with a 90 degree rotation, such as a landscape scan, still gets its number at the bottom center as displayed, and it reads upright. Pages that are cropped by the PDF are measured from the visible area.

Why does it say the number doesn't fit?

On a very small page, the number plus the margin on both sides is wider than the page. A 24 pt label such as Page 10 of 10 is about 150 pt wide before the margins are counted. Lower the font size or the margin, or use the shorter format 1.
