Tally counter: tap to count, saved on this device

One huge tap button, up to 12 named counters, a step size and an optional target. Your counts stay after a refresh.

How it works

  1. Tap the big +1 button, or press Space or the Up arrow, for each thing you count
  2. Add counters for other things, rename them, and set a step or a target
  3. Come back later: your counts are still here

What a tally counter does

A tally counter adds one to a running total each time you tap it, so you can count people, laps, reps, rows of knitting, items on a shelf or anything else without keeping the number in your head. This page has one very large +1 button that fills the width of the screen, so you can tap it without looking. Under it are a minus button for when you tapped by mistake, a Reset button, and the current count in large digits. You can keep up to 12 counters at once, each with its own name, such as Adults, Children and Staff, and the total across all of them is shown under the counter.

Step size, targets and the reached state

The step sets how much one tap adds. A step of 1 counts single items. A step of 10 suits a pile you count in tens, and a step of 108 or 33 suits a prayer bead round counted in one go. The minus button subtracts the same step. A count never goes below 0, because a tally counts things that happened, and it stops at 1,000,000,000. A target is optional. Type a number and the counter shows a progress bar and how many are left. When the count reaches the target, the panel shows Target reached with a tick, the tab of that counter gets a dashed outline, and phones that support vibration can buzz once. Counting past the target is allowed, and the counter stays in the reached state.

Reset with undo, and keyboard keys

Reset sets the selected counter to 0 and keeps the old number, so the Undo reset button brings it back. That undo is held until you tap the counter again, reset a different one or remove it, so one slip of the finger does not cost you a count of 400. On a computer, with the counter area focused (click or Tab to it), Space or the Up arrow adds the step to the selected counter and the Down arrow subtracts it. The keys are ignored while you type in the name, step or target boxes, and Space on a focused button presses that button as usual. There is a switch to vibrate on each tap; it only appears when your browser supports vibration, which most Android phones do and iPhones do not.

Where your counts are saved

Counters, names, steps and targets are saved in this browser on this device, using local storage, and they are never uploaded. Refresh the page or close the tab and the counts are still there. They do not follow you to another phone or browser, and clearing the site data in your browser removes them. If you need a record, write the final number down. The page counts visits with Google Analytics, never your counts or names. A tally counter is a good fit for headcounts at a door, laps of a track, sets and reps in a workout, rows in a knitting or crochet pattern, and stock counts, anywhere one tap per item is faster than a pen.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tally counter keep my count when I refresh the page?

Yes. Every change is saved in your browser's local storage on this device straight away, so a refresh, a closed tab or a restart keeps all 12 counters, their names, steps and targets. Clearing site data in your browser, or using a different phone or browser, starts from 0.

How many counters can I have at once?

Up to 12, each with its own name, step and target. The total across all counters is shown under them. Use Add counter to create one, and Remove this counter to delete the selected one; at least one counter always stays.

How do I count in tens or by 33?

Set Step to 10 or 33. One tap on the big button then adds 10 or 33, and the minus button takes the same amount off. The step is saved per counter, so one counter can count in ones while another counts in fives.

Can I undo a reset?

Yes. After Reset, an Undo reset button appears and puts back the old number, for example 400 instead of 0. It stays until you tap a counter, reset another counter or remove the counter, because from then on the old number would overwrite new counting.

Which keys work on a computer?

With focus on the counter area (click it or Tab to it), Space or the Up arrow adds the step to the selected counter, and the Down arrow subtracts it. The keys do nothing while the cursor is in the name, step or target box, so typing 25 as a target does not change your count.

What happens when I reach my target?

The counter shows Target reached with a tick and a full progress bar, and its tab gets a dashed outline. If vibration is switched on and your phone supports it, it buzzes in a short double pulse. You can keep counting past the target, for example 12 of 10.
