Convert text to handwriting on lined paper

Type your text and see it in a handwriting font on lined, grid or plain paper. Pick the ink, size and spacing, then download PNG pages or a PDF.

How it works

  1. Type or paste your text
  2. Pick a handwriting font, ink colour and paper
  3. Download the pages as PNG or as one PDF

How typed text becomes a handwritten page

The tool sets your text in a handwriting font, wraps it to the width of a page and draws it on paper. Lines are broken between words, and a word wider than a whole line is cut between letters. Blank lines in your text stay blank lines. When the lines fill the page, the text continues on the next one, up to 40 pages. Everything is drawn on a canvas in your browser from three bundled fonts: Caveat and Indie Flower under the SIL Open Font License, and Homemade Apple under the Apache License 2.0. The preview is the same drawing that is exported, so what you see is the page you download.

Paper, spacing and a worked example

Writing sits on the ruled lines, so the line spacing is the text size multiplied by the spacing value. At the defaults, 18 pt text with spacing 1.5, the lines are 27 pt apart. A4 leaves room for 26 such lines after a 72 pt top margin and a 54 pt bottom margin, and Letter for 24, so a text of 60 wrapped lines makes 3 pages on either size. A larger size or spacing gives fewer lines per page: at 24 pt and 1.5 the lines are 36 pt apart and A4 holds 19. Lined paper draws a rule under every line, grid paper adds vertical lines the same distance apart, and plain paper draws none. The red margin line is optional and moves the text a little to the right.

What natural variation does

Printed text repeats every letter exactly. With natural variation on, each letter is moved up or down by up to about 1 point at the default size and tilted by up to about 1 degree, and each line drifts slightly. The shifts come from a seeded random sequence, so the same text, settings and seed always give the same page, and the Shuffle button picks a different seed. This makes the page look less mechanical. It does not change the shape of the letters: every a is still the same a, because it is a font. Turn the variation off and each line is drawn as one piece of text, which keeps the joins of connected scripts cleaner.

What it is not

This is a font, not your own handwriting, and the page is typed text on a picture of paper. A teacher, an exam board or an employer who asks for handwritten work may not accept it, and this tool does not make it pass as yours. Use it for things where the look is the point: a handwritten-style note, a card, a poster, a worksheet or a prop. The fonts cover Basic Latin, Latin-1 accents and common punctuation. Characters outside that range, such as Greek, Chinese or emoji, are drawn in your browser's fallback font and the page says how many there are. Nothing is uploaded: the fonts are served from this site and the pages are drawn on your device.

PNG and PDF files

Download PNG saves the page on screen as an image about 1786 by 2526 pixels on A4 and 1836 by 2376 on Letter, which is 216 pixels per inch. All pages as PNG (.zip) puts every page in one archive, named handwriting-page-1.png, handwriting-page-2.png and so on. Download PDF puts the same pages in one document, each page full size on A4 or Letter. The PDF holds the pages as images, so its text cannot be selected or searched. Devices with a small canvas limit may export at a lower resolution.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert text to handwriting?

Type or paste your text in the box, choose a font such as Caveat, an ink colour and lined paper, and the page appears at once. Press Download PDF for one document or Download PNG for the page on screen. A short note fits one page; 60 wrapped lines make 3 on A4.

Can I use my own handwriting?

No. The letters come from three fonts, so every page looks like the font, not like you. A tool that copies your own writing needs a sample of it, and this one does not take one. If you only need a signature, the Signature Maker draws one with your finger or mouse.

Will it pass as real handwriting for school work?

It should not be used that way. It is a font on a picture of paper, and a teacher or exam board that asks for handwritten work may not accept it. Check your school's rules first. The tool is meant for notes, cards, posters and worksheets where the handwritten style is the goal.

How many lines fit on a page?

At 18 pt text with 1.5 line spacing, A4 fits 26 lines and Letter fits 24. At 24 pt and 1.5 the lines are 36 pt apart and A4 fits 19. Lower the size or the spacing to fit more lines, up to 40 pages in all.

Which handwriting fonts are included, and are they free to use?

Caveat and Indie Flower are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and Homemade Apple under the Apache License 2.0. Both licences allow use in what you make, including printing. The licence texts are served with the font files from this site.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is processed in your browser and not uploaded. The pages are drawn on a canvas on your device and the PDF is built there too. Only your option choices, such as font, ink and paper, are saved in this browser, never the text.
