Free resume builder with PDF download

Fill in your contact details, jobs, education and skills, reorder the sections, pick one of four single-column templates and download a PDF with real text.

How it works

  1. Edit the sample: contact details, summary, jobs, education and skills
  2. Reorder or add sections and pick a template, colour and paper size
  3. Download the PDF, or save the data file to edit it later

How the resume is built

This free resume builder turns the contact details, summary, jobs, education, skills and projects you type into a single-column PDF whose text can be selected, searched and copied, with no account, no watermark and no upload. The page opens with a sample resume already filled in, so you can see a finished result and replace it line by line. Each section has a heading you can rename, entries you can add, remove and move up or down, and the sections themselves can be reordered, so a recent graduate can put Education first and a manager can put Experience first. A bullets box takes one point per line; a typed dash or bullet mark at the start of a line is removed, because the layout prints its own bullet. The preview is drawn from the same instructions as the PDF, so the page breaks you see are the page breaks you get.

Templates, page size and a worked example

There are four templates. Classic is set in Times with a centred name and rules under the headings. Modern and Compact use Helvetica, with the name and headings in the colour you pick, and Compact uses smaller type and narrower margins to fit more on a page. Simple uses Helvetica with no rules and more white space. Paper is A4 or Letter. On A4 with the Classic template the margins are 54 pt, which leaves 487.28 pt for text, and one line of 10.5 pt text takes 12.81 pt, so a page holds about 57 lines before the space between sections. Replace the bullets of the first job in the sample with 40 lines that each hold the single letter A and A4 makes 2 pages in Classic, Modern and Simple but still 1 page in Compact. Lines are broken using the real character widths of the standard Helvetica and Times fonts, taken from the tables that ship with the pdf-lib library. A long word or link is cut between letters rather than running off the page, and a heading is never left alone at the bottom of a page.

What makes it easy for software to read

The layout is one column, with the reading order top to bottom: name, contact line, then each section in the order you chose. Dates sit on the same line as the job title, headings are plain words such as Experience and Education, and there are no tables, text boxes, icons, photos or text inside pictures. The PDF holds real text in the standard Helvetica and Times fonts, not a picture of text. That removes the usual reasons for text to come out scrambled when a system reads a PDF, but this tool cannot test your file against any employer's applicant tracking system and does not promise how one will treat it. It also does not score your resume, suggest keywords or write your bullets. Links are printed as plain text and are not clickable.

Characters, limits and what is kept on your device

The PDF fonts print Latin letters, digits, accents such as e with an acute accent and n with a tilde, and common punctuation. A few letters they lack are printed as the plain letter and counted in a note, such as the Polish L with a stroke becoming L. Text in Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Arabic or emoji cannot be printed, so the PDF button turns off and names the section to fix. Limits: 12 sections, 12 entries in each, 4 links, 1800 characters in one bullets box and 6 pages. Nothing is kept on your device unless you turn on Save my resume on this device as I type, which is off by default; when it is on, the resume is stored in this browser only, so it does not follow you to another browser, and a button or clearing site data removes it. Save data file writes everything to a small .json file you can open again here later or keep as a backup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a resume for free without signing up?

Edit the sample on this page: replace the name and contact lines, change the summary, jobs, education and skills, and delete what you do not need. Pick a template and press Download PDF. There is no account, no watermark and no page limit other than 6 pages.

Will the PDF work with applicant tracking systems?

It avoids what often breaks text reading: one column, real text in Helvetica or Times, no tables, icons or photos, and plain section names. No tool can promise how a given employer's system will read a file, and this one does not test against any. Open the PDF, select all and paste it into a text editor to check the order.

Why is the Download PDF button turned off?

Either the resume is empty, or a section holds a character the PDF fonts cannot print, such as Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Arabic or emoji. The message under the button names the section, for example Contact or Experience. Remove or replace those characters and the button turns on again.

How do I change the order of the sections or add a new one?

Each section has Move section up and Move section down buttons, so Education can go above Experience. Add a section with the buttons at the bottom of the form: summary, experience, education, skills, projects, or a custom section such as Awards or Languages. Each type can be added once; custom sections up to 12 in all.

Does it save my resume, and how do I delete it?

Only if you ask it to. Saving in this browser is off by default; open Colour, paper size and saving and turn on Save my resume on this device as I type to keep it between visits. A note on the page says when it is on, and Delete saved copy from this device removes it. Save data file also gives you a .json file you can open again with Open data file, for example to move to another computer.

Is my resume uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is processed in your browser and not uploaded. The preview and the PDF are made on your device. Only if you turn saving on, your resume is kept in this browser's own storage and nowhere else. The page counts visits with Google Analytics using only the tool name, never anything you typed.
